Default Joe Calzaghe v Peter Manfredo Jnr
Well its the champ against the pretender. Who do you think will win? Personally I do not think Calzaghe has had the recognition he deserves. He has been undefeated and champion for over 10 years

I gotta say I was one of those peeps who doubted him, sure he beat Eubank but he was already on a downhill spiral at that point ( never the same after the Watson fight ) The guy is always in superb condition, and never underestimates any opponent. That is the sign of a true champ and think any doubters of his ability can refer to the way he utterly destroyed Jeff Lacy, which imo was one of the greatest fights of the last decade.

I dont know much about this Manfredo, but he was a "Contender" in that TV program or something? Looking at his record it is not that great, but he seems to be getting a second chance now. Anyone know how hard he hits? Is he a counter boxer ( aka Eubank ) or a hard hitter ( aka Nigel Benn ) ?

The Calzaghe/Lacy fight was a fantastic show of skill and stamina and I'm looking forward to this, Khan on the other hand really needs someone to fight against rather than pummel - it's getting pretty boring now.

Not allot to say really, Joe was just way too fast for him but I would have liked to have seen a little more but I understand why it was stopped, Manfredo just wasnt hitting back so what can the ref do..

What i would love to know is how Manfredo managed to get a shot like that against a guy like Calzaghe? I would presume it was the money factor due to the hype that was probably behind Manfredo over in America due to that Contender show.

Could have warned him, but yeah you're right. I'd of liked to have seen the fight go on for a few more rounds...

I think it was stopped way too soon. Calzaghe might have thrown over 200 punches in 3 rounds but if you looked at the other guy he wasnt hurt. Out of those 200 odd punches thrown he only landed 76.

I think given another round he might have punched himself out and then Manfredo would have stepped up.

Very unsatisfying match and a bad call imho

Just saw the fight on youtube

So let me get this straight...

If you punch someone enough times in the arms and gloves....you win by a TKO?

BS. Whether Mafredo was outclassed or not is irrelevant, he clearly was NOT hurt, and letting the fight continue on would have been interesting considering how much energy Joe was wasting and Peter was conserving.

That ref shouldn't be allowed back in the ring. [thumbdown]

Joe Calzaghe can fight like that for 12 rounds.. [yes]

But I agree the fight was stopped too early, but it's not the refs fault. It's Peter Manfredo's fault as he just didn't put up any resistance, he was like the punch bag with legs.. [rofl]

heh, then it was a stupid fight to begin with.

The man doesn't seem to have anything close to a hard throw (he's just fast as hell and catches folk with his unorthodox style), so the fight could've gone 12 rounds with each one looking like that last one. The result?

Joe Calzaghe wins by decision 5000 punches thrown, 300 landed.
Peter Manfredo looks the same as he did in round one, 30 punches thrown, 19 landed.

[rofl]

Any word if Cal plans on taking some real boxers in the US? I'd like to see speed vs speed with him and Mayweather.

I believe he is lining up Jermain Taylor for a July fight, then they will try to get Bernard Hopkins for Jan 2008, or at least, HBO want to see the two of them in the ring.

Hopkins? [yes]

Should be interesting (speed vs power linda like the Taylor vs Hopkins fight, funnily enough). I reckon Cal will need to land all 5000 punches if he hopes to see any kind of results from this one.

It was a stupid fight, Manfredo didn't deseve to be in there with Calzaghe, only reason he was is because of that stupid TV show.

Hey now, I agree that he was out of his league (though the fight should NOT have been stopped).

But the Contender is a fairly entertaining show. Nothing to take serious, but def. worth watching amateurs beat each other's brains out.

BTW, the third season will have the contestants split by UK and US fighters

The fight wouldn't of lasted much longer anyway with how Manfredo was fighting, the only thing that would of happened is that Manfredo would of been hurt more.

Saw the fight last night. Manfredo shouldn't have even been in the ring with Calzaghe. Calzaghe should fight Mikkel Kessler before fighting anyone else. [yes]
