Default Wierd boad building idea
The question that pops up in my mind is whether using the metal drums or whether getting fiberglass pontoons is cheaper? My best guess is that, if metal drums were cheaper, everyone would be using them.

How are you going to power it: Motor? Sails? Dolphins? In-laws chained to oars and whipped if they don't row with proper enthusiam?

Zkrib, chained female virgin slaves. That, and a small outboard and the above mentioned sails.

Japher, it does sound like a boat people boat doesn't it? That's good, boat people should know boats, yes?

Poly drums would be hard to weld. I think they make stainless drums...

Don't they have a lot of wood in the Philippines? Some boats have been built out of wood.

Inner tubes?

Remember: You're dealing with Archimedes's Law that a floating object displaces its own weight in water. --Ya need to displace a lot of water while keeping your boat lightweight.

Check out the trimaran.

Problem is, I know jack about sailing and should start out on something...indestructable and cheap for when I destroy it.

I read the title as "road building"

There's an even better idea: rent a boat.

Check out the DUO, 8m long

We could join up a couple of bunkas and put a deck across, that might work.

We have less than three weeks and a fairly small library. I think I'll go to this place and ask if they have plans for a simple cat good for poor locals to build just cheap...

Although the L.A. Library is closed today, I just checked on their catelogue.

There's no catamaran construction books per se but the Science and Technology section has maybe a dozen books on amateur boat building.

(Another place to check is Amazon.com. )

Zkrib, found just the thing on ebay. The link is so long I'm not sure I got it all. Thirty four boat plans on one CD for $5.95. One is a neat little cat.
