Stamatis Spanoudakis - Κύριε των Δυνάμεων

monologue 04-05-2011 05:56 PM

Beautiful music.....All my respect for Spanoudakis - one of the greatest composers of these times and all most known greek composers and singers: Vangelis Papatanassiou, Demis Roussos, Nana Mouskouri, Alkistis Protopsalti, Haris Alexiou .... Specially respect for the monks and lay peoples who sings psaltic and byzanthin music.

Yes, Spanoudakis has done a good job with these esp with Κύριε των Δυνάμεων (is that translated "Lord of Hosts"?).

I'll admit my Greek skills have all but evaporated, but I don't see what any of this has to do with Greek spinach pie!

Ohhhh . . . okay, thanks. ;0) But, now I'm in the mood for some spinach pie and some of that bazooka music I hear at the Greek fest. Maybe even a side dish of kefi!

http://www.monachos.net/forum/images/smilies/smile.png Rick, how about some ouzo too? Because looking at his name we can even make it Spanakouzakis which means littlespinachpie&ouzo

My half Greek friend used to say bazooka for bouzuki and it was funny-cute since I imagined a place with many people holding bazooka on their shoulders and dancing. http://www.monachos.net/forum/images/smilies/smile.png

Ah is Lent now and we can't have kefi... neither kefir. I read kefir's name comes from kefi.

Good post. At first I had a lot of trouble with Greek names but they are really very simple. The fact that Spanoudakis' name ends in -dakis means he's from Crete. If I'm not mistaken and I'd like those who know Greek to correct me, the word Spanos means someone who is still "whiskerless".

The common ending of -opoulos means "son of". For example Papadopoulos means "son of a priest". Up here in north Greece the Greeks have names usually ending in -os. We have a lot of Pontios who came here in 1922. Their names end in -idis which, again, means "son of". Those refugees who spoke Turkish but were from Asia Minor had names ending in -ogloy.

All this sounded really complicated to me years ago but it is actually very simple. In English, Swedish etc. we have names like Peterson (son of Peter) etc. Words have always fascinated me and I enjoy discovering the meaning and root of words.

Coming back to our spanokopitta............ Tomorrow I intend to gather some nettles (only the sweet and tender leaves) and make a nettle pie. It tastes just like our delicious spanokopitta but a little sweeter. I have a small nettle patch in my garden that took me a while to cultivate but it's coming along well now. Every year I dry nettles for nettle tea and use the fresh nettles for pittes.

Spanoudakis is one of my favourite composers. He was a spiritual child of Gerondissa Gavriela. He is a very religious person.
I have only one of his CD's - John's tear. I have never been to the Island of Patmos but a friend has. She told me it was well worth visiting.

Effie, that was very interesting about the Greek last names thing! http://www.monachos.net/forum/images/smilies/smile.png Thanks for sharing. Also I'm surprised you cook with nettles there... I've never heard of that. Here we have "stinging nettles", and when I'm picking weeds it feels like bugs are stinging my hands! I think God created those on account of my sins.

The rest of the time have you thought of rubber gloves http://www.monachos.net/forum/images/smilies/smile.png

Flistelib 04-07-2011 09:28 PM

Effie, yes the ending -akis indicates people are from Crete.

Effie, now I am drooling over the nettle pie you mentioned since my mom and grandmothers made it too, but here I do not know where to go collect nettles so I can prepare it. http://www.monachos.net/forum/images/smilies/frown.png I used to collect nettles when I was little and it was an adventure http://www.monachos.net/forum/images/smilies/smile.png Oh and I heard my grandmothers saying some of their friends were lightly hitting themselves with nettles (when they had arthritis, rheumatism etc.) to make the blood circulate. They created some warm place like a sauna and after that they would use the nettle for blood circulation. Amazing, no? I just drink the nettle tea that is sold here and tried to find out about fresh nettle for pitas but have no idea where to gather it. When pregnant with Nicholas that spring I even tried to order fresh nettle from a food store here, but they said there is no demand so they can not order it.
