A terrible shame to be sure, but that article seems really dodgy. It says at the start that she died two hours after the electricity being cut. On the next paragraph it says that the guy came to turn the power off 6 days previously. I'm pretty sure the facts are being changed there to make it a bigger scandal than it probably is.

Also, if you don't pay your power bill, you get the power cut off. Why is that the electric company's fault? You'd think if your life depended on a stable supply you'd want to make sure that was paid, or at least get a battery backup or generator.

Meh.

Not to sound harsh, but if you're in such a delecate situation, why do you not have some sort of generator/battery backup in place?

I mean, one lightning strike nearby and you could be off for days.

Power has gone off for over 6 hours 4 times in the last 3 months where I live.

Main supplier of income sick in bed? Children not able to get money or work?

Maybe the battery pack lasted 2 hours. If the power gets cut off from the power company, a battery is only going to last so long. Not like the power is going to come back anytime soon. Even if you get your bill paid you might have to wait a day or two.

Though you would think that she would have called the electric company or have some friends/neighbors to help care for her.
I wouldn't say that it is the power companies fault 100%, but when it comes down to it, they did kill her.

Isn't there some form of government aid for this? I know that over here in the united states if my fiance's sister doesn't want to work I get to pay for her $300 a month in foodstamps along with all her bills so that she can blow what money she does have on... well.. lets call it "stuff" and leave it at that. I love governments.. take from the moderately poor and give to the lazy. Its so Robin Hood.

While I think cutting the power was crappy, perhaps the power company wasn't fully aware of the situation. She should have had a backup plan. Maybe she should have been in the hospital if the situation was that serious.

Read that part of the article again, I think you misunderstood it.

As for the tragedy itself, I concur: meh.

From what i gather, is that no one was officially notified of her condition. So, when they did go to cut it, how could they know? Fact is, i know power companies give many warnings before cutting the power, and here they specifically state that she received these. Somebody, either herself or a relative (indeed, the article does make it sound like she had decent family contact) should have taken care of this long before it got to this point.

It is a sad loss, and one that could have been fixed with some communication. In this case though, her family is just as much at fault as the company is (unless they did notify them, which would make it all different)...

Yeah, blame the power company, and not the people not paying their bills and in effect stealing electricity.

If I needed electricity to live, I damn sure wouldn't trust my local energy distributer for my survival, who's to say that a lightning strike comes along and ****s up the power lines?

But then I guess it would be 'god' wanted you to die. What if it were some hooligans stealing copper wire, would they then be charged for murder because someone didn't ensure any problems wouldn't happen with instrumentations for their survival.

I love how big corporations always launch investigations to "look into what happened". I'll do it for free! The woman was on an oxygen pump powered by your electricity, she didnt pay, you cut the power, she died! Why do they need a full investigation? I can see the police investigating for the purpose of determining if something criminal occurred.

Its a damn shame, but like most people said, you don't pay your bill, your power gets cut. Plain and simple. Her family should have informed the power company of her condition after the first notice arrived.

What, you'd run your respirator off of an UPS farm?

A gasoline-powered generator would probably be a better choice.
You know, you can refuel those without the need for a wall outlet.

This is once again a case of FM sensationalist reporting. If all of the FACTS aren't reported, informed decisions can't be made. This isn't a case of $122 dollars being equated to a life, it's a case of miscommunication to force a response.

Indeed if you rely in electricity to live then some backup systems need to be in place.

#1... small generator connected to a few emergency sockets around the home for emergency use. It kick starts when power is out from the mains.

#2 emergency call system. There are call systems that an old person can use where they just hit a button and that tells an emergency team that there is someone in trouble. They then rush out to see what it is.

#3. make sure the electricity company you are with has a special registration area for people that can't have electricity cut off.

I'm glad I didn't read all these post and didn't read one thing about this, exactly how I feel.
