Please could others comment on the appropriateness of icon painters (I'm reliably told that talk of icon 'writing' is a western pretension) signing their creations on the front within the border of the image itself.
I have come across the work of an artist online and found the presence of a signature on every icon very distracting and faintly inappropriate. Had it been on the back I would have had no objection but I really couldn't feel it was quite right that the artist wanted to advertise their work in this way. It certainly detracted from the work's spiritual authenticity for me. Maybe I'm being over-sensitive. What feel you? |
