Default have you ever been stung buying a 2nd hand car
Lol i have no luck with cars me

Last year i bought a fiat punto Mk 2 only to have spend £500 to get it right, and still needed some work doing to it.

Finally sold the Punto yesterday.

So 3 days ago i buy another car 53k on the clock full electric everything, FSH, engine proper clean and sweet no leaks, 1 owner from new old couple so no ragging it about, plus MOT till Feb 2011

After being stung in the past i spent nearly 2 hours checking the car over for problems on the test drive it drove great without a single problem, as i was listening for any knocks or squeaks.

I was well happy with my new car & finally thought i got a great nice to drive car.

UNTIL TODAY!!!!!

When running my Sister about Town to do the shopping, the clutch suddenly went stiff and there was a clicking sound when the clutch was fully pressed and some slight crunching going into 2nd gear.

Just my luck the Clutch is on it way out, so the money i got from the Punto that i was going to save for a rainy day is now going have to be used on a new clutch for the car.

So no car at all now till this get sorted and it going to cost me a few quid to.
Also while the Clutch is getting fixed I'll also get the Cam belt changed aswell just to be sure as in the book it has no mention of this being changed in the past.

I think the last owners being old, proberly drove riding the clutch to much.

I know clutches can go at any point but i wasn't expecting this to happen just 3 days into having my car. [no][thumbdown]

So have you ever been stung on a 2nd hand car & what problems did you have with it?

Yep, my impala, within 2000 kilometers of owning the thing the transmission went (4th gear anyway). Luckily I bought some warranty that was applicable to 2nd hand cars, so the bill was ~$500 (including warranty) versus $1500.

Still pissed me off though.

You have got to expect to put money into a used car as soon as you buy it. A clutch isn't that bad.

Did you change the fluids and do a tune-up on it?

No the car recently has had a service, I've checked the brake fluids, engine coolent oil ect prior to buying all was running at the right level.

But i do plan to change the oil myself in the next couple of weeks and replacing it with some good stuff.

When i bought my impala the power steering went out on the way home!!
Turns out the line busted and the dealer replaced it for free (otherwise i would have drove the car up his ass)

Other than that, no real big issues so far. Just a waterpump and some normal wear and tear stuff like brakes, plugs, tires etc. Put over 60k on it so far and at 126k I can't complain (and i beat the crap out of it too!)

Before you go spending money, check the warranty. A lot of cars are three years or 60,000 miles, whichever is soonest. You might be able to get it replaced under warranty if your car has this stipulation.

Sort of got caught twice, first was owned by an apprentice mechanic so thought it'd've been well looked after and maintained - was the biggest f*** up I've ever seen - almost all of the problems were down to his imcompetence and relatively eaily fixed except the gearbox bearings. That was my fault for being in a hurry to get back for supper - it was cheap, though. The second case was also a gearbox issue - I'd done a full service and belts but couldn't quite get the gearbox fill plug out so left it - no sign of leaks, anyway - 4 or 5 k kms later some bearing noise was evident - very low oil level again! So put in another s/h one.

That's about it - I expect to hav to do some work on a car, just check them out as well as I can first.

not `stung` but annoyed at garages - my espace has stamps to say it has had full services - yet when i changed the air filter myself i found the date on the side - november 2003 - none of the air filter or cabin filter had been changed in 7 years.....

Sadly, that's not uncommon - sometimes they'll just tick some the boxes without doing the work and if they're caught it's 'prove it'. Baskets!

I think that's rather unlucky.

I had a coil pack go about 2 weeks before they issued a recall for coil packs to all be replaced. It's a £35 part, but the repair bill was well over £100 [cursing]

Well car booked into my local Garage tomorrow at 8am, so hopefully should have it sorted by tomorrow afternoon.

In the meantime gotta do without my car till then.

Getting work not a problem my old man will run me tonight, it's getting home at 6am that going to be a sod, as i hate folking out nearly 10 quid for a Taxi & having to wait around for ages for one to show up.

I have been once, but it wasn't the sellers fault. On my M3 it had all of the records with it which included a new water pump being put in about 5 months and 10k miles before I bought it. Well 5 days after I got the car the water pump bearing went bad and started weeping. I replaced it with a quality race unit with lifetime warranty and haven't looked back![thumbup]

Been lucky with my last car, a Peugeot 306 1.9D, its just failed its MOT on corrosion so I'm selling it on, but I probably spent less than £2000 on it in the 6 years I owned it.
Not too bad.

And just bought a Ford Mondeo TDCi for £400, battery went the second day I had it, £92 for that, hopefully nothing else goes on it.

Check it out on my thread.

not really... bought a 97 celica with over 150K on the clock 4 years ago. Never missed a beat in the 3 years i had it, infact, i went out and bought a 95 JDM SSII (essentially the same car) to replace it... that one lasted 4 days but that was my fault!

3 weeks ago I got a Focus CC3 convertible.

1) battery went dead £90 not covered by warranty
2) wrong code supplied with radio so £12 for Ford to tell me what it is.

and two weeks later

3) hydraulic hose splits that operates the roof £480 to fix and again not covered by the lovely not worth a **** warranty.

so yep I've been stung. [cursing]

And this from a car sold by a main dealer.

i bought a car with a full VW service history, and quickly realised service histories mean absolutely sod all.

because the car obviously hadnt been serviced for years when i pulled the plugs, oil, filters, brake pads.

yay volkswagen approved service stations, someone paid them through the nose for peace of mind, and the stealer just ticked the boxes.

another tale a friend told me today - he was asked to look at a non starting land cruiser , couldnt find anything wrong at the top end , but the dispstick wasnt showing anything , so he pulled the sump off - to be greeted by what can only be described as black jelly.

262,000 miles and never been serviced properly , yet the stamps where in the book.

the jelly? that was the oil.
