One way or another if they cant wallow in mud (water) to cool off they die of heat exhaustion.

A lady in Cabarete let me know that she knows of someone in Santo Domingo that raises potbellied pigs. Does this ring a bell anyone?? As the story goes, she'll contact him and relay my contact details ect ect, for some unexplainable reason I don't think this'll ever happen?
Pleeeeeaaaasseeee let me know ..... any miniature pig leads will be much appreciated.

Piggies Anyone?

This may be a strange question to ask ....

Does anyone have any info on finding a miniature pig in the DR? I've done the searches but can't find anything.

Only mini pigs folks, I don't want a 300lb P.I.G running around in my living room!!

Much appreciate any info/leads.

Amy

P.S. hey Tom, what do you think Alba's reaction will be to a little piggy running around our yard?! I think Hannelie's going to love it!

I had a kennel and raised German Shepherds. I bought a preverbial Pig in a Poke and took her home.

Pigs are smarter than dogs are.

Pigs have no sweat glands so they "root" to make mud so they can keep their bodies cool. Putting a ring in their nose in the DR is like putting a gun to their heads and shooting them. They will overheat and just die. Unless of course you A/C their living quarters. Pigs are very clean animals. They are cleaner than dogs given the chance.

My pig got to be about 550 lbs. All my friends that had restaurants saved the scraps and the shavings for me and I had garbage bags delivered to me every day. Problem became the pig was too social. People would come to the kennel to look at the Dogs and the pig would spot them and get out of her pen to come over and hang out. The people would see this 550 lb pig running at them and try to climb into the kennels with the attack trained shepherds instead. She was just like a little puppy. Rub her belly and she would roll over with her legs in the air. Actually like my last girlfriend also.

I like the idea of you getting this pig. She should be big enough for my Easter dinner and you will have been finished trying to deal with her by then. You will save the 199- pesos charge for your meal btwhttp://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/happy.gif Just start imagining her now with an apple in the mouth and you will not be startled in 7 months.

You should have just introduced him to a little restaurant called McDonald's Those McRib Sandwich's (made in Dubuque I might add, really!) were messy, but, to die for! I loved that sauce! Especially with a little Andre Champagne!

roast it!!!

leangarance 03-10-2006 07:00 AM

The ring is to stop the rooting..sad to say I did not enjoy that happening to the pigs but it is an effective tool for rooting. I would not have one that roots even on my farm let alone in a yard..The pig would probably be a house pet so may not have to worry about rooting or mud..http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/happy.gif PAM

I am sure Dominicans consider them a food source not a pet..Sorry to say that....But my husband was quick to kill one of mine when I was not at home...Even after he knew mine were for pets...I had the sweetest pig who got huge but was a great pet outdoors...Came home and he had sold her to a bunch of Mexicans at Christmas time..These people are not likely to have this type of animal as a pet....My goats etc do not last long as pets either...Mine got sold or slaughtered everytime my husband got the chance since he never considered any of the farm animals as pets...I do have a Tom Turkey for 2+ years who he has failed to catch otherwise I am sure he would have been dinner at some point..I believe it is just the culture..Even my horse I had for 12+ years was not safe from the sale barn if he got tired of feeding a useless animal..(crippled broodmare I used for breeding and no longer bred her...) they all must have a purpose so he says..Maybe that is the Dominican style? In my case it is anyway.....http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/depressed.gif PAM

Mjyzpzph 04-01-2006 07:00 AM

Geez, Pam. That's showing disrespect for you, not for the animals. If you thought something of them, then he should have, too, because of his feelings for you.

Moving on quickly ... there are no Dominicans here to eat Amy's soon to be pig-pets. This is Ciudad de Xanadu! (Xanadu City!) Only civilised behavior is allowed here. Read: No Liberals!

JAJAJAJAJAJAJAJA!

Good night, all!

XR,

I do not want any asses... I really want a pet donkey... both ends... for my sis for xmas!

leangarance 04-28-2006 07:00 AM

Never had any to overheat here in south GA 90 degree weather....My Dominican Husband put the ring in their noses since that is how his pigs were raised IN THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC...
My pigs had a kiddie swimming pool..They make great pets BUT invaraiably end up as LARGE pigs in the end..they are not going to stay small..I have a friend who has two whose belly drag the ground..it is sad to see..get sores..
The pigs are a novelty while small and when they get too large people dump them off into the wild here....they breed with wild boars and the local hunters told me about the mixed breeds..as a result of people turning the too large POT bellied pigs into the wild...
Cute as they are...I would just get a dog if I were you..http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/happy.gif PAM

leangarance 05-10-2006 07:00 AM

Enjoy your pet pig..Do not feed them much and watch all of your other pets foods as they are called PIGS for a reason http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/happy.gif..BUT unless you put a ring in their nose they will destroy your lawn.. Ask a Dominican to put a ring in the pigs nose or you will have nothing left of your yard and you will be inviting Tom XR over for those chops! When mine get too big I call the Mexicans to come and get them (only the non friendly OVERSIZED pot bellied pigs..not my pets)..http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/happy.gif PAM

leangarance 05-16-2006 07:00 AM

He never liked McDonald's..Preferred a place called Lechonera for their pork w/rice and beans...LOL http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/happy.gif PAM

Nwxffgke 05-17-2006 07:00 AM

aaawwww, come on folks! Not ALL piggies are for eating.

Seriously, I think it would be a great idea for my daughter - she loves animals.

Hey Girlie, could you imagine a piggy dressed in those daisy-duke shorts you showed me? http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

Stay well,
Amy

P.S. crissss - YUK!!! You eat dogs?!?! http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/shocked.gif

((((WHY DO I GET THE FEELING OUR HOUSE IS GONNA BE A ZOOOO))))

Sxscdergh 05-19-2006 07:00 AM

you are sick! You were out to late! Go to bed.... wake up... then tell me if you still want a pig... if you bring that sucker into the store to play with rocky... i will .... i do not know what i will do.. but i will think of something.

Dweplyododo 05-19-2006 07:00 AM

He doesn't come in the house, but he does like to make life misserable for our 3 dogs!He bites their ears and tails! Then he chases them around the yard. All pigs, including "Miniature" pigs get big and fat, unless you restrict their diets! (Hey,that sounds familiar!)That is the "Down" side. The "UP" side is that all you have to do is exchange the pig for a smaller one when they get too large. Then you get to eat the large one!!!http://www.dr1.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

PS,they really are fun,and clean too,but he does tear up the grass with his nose! After I eat this one I think I will stick to dogs and cats. The dogs and cats don't taste as good as the pig,but they don't tear up the yard!
