I did hear (and believe) that the underage kid, 18 instead of 19, who was served in the old Basin Street, (and for which the place was shut down), was a setup.

I always presumed Basin Street to have been unlicensed and illegal whatever the age of its clientèle.

I don't know if this is relevant, but when our son was an infant about four years ago (probably less than 6 months old when all they do is sleep all day), my wife and I stopped in to O'Doul's. The kid was sleeping and if he started a fuss, I'd get up and leave. I just figured it would be good to get that good live music in his veins. But we were told that the liquor laws didn't allow him to be there, so we got the boot.

As for Langley being part of Vancouver, it's home to the Vancouver Titans, so yeah, it is. I was there the other night to watch them take on the mighty Bellingham Slam.

..was thinking a lot about New Orleans lately because the police are cracking down on street bands here in Paris and they already killed the bar and resto gigs with the same regs they have in Vancouver. John do they still allow street bands in New Orleans or do the gangsters just shoot them?

Interesting question, with a complicated answer. You still see people playing on the street in the French Quarter, particularly around Jackson Square, but that's really a tourist thing. There was quite a bit of friction pre-Katrina between musicians and rich, corporate condo types over the 'disruption' of street music (although to me buying a condo in the FQ and then complaining about music is kind of like buying at the beach and complaing about the surf). The late Tuba Fats did a lot of brokering between parties in this. Since Katrina the issue has died down a bit, but it flares up from time to time.

The really stupid stuff happens in the Treme, which post Katrina has seen an influx of white gentrifyers who apparently think 'culture' should confine itself to museums. These are the asshats who complain everytime a second line kicks off. A number of musicians have been arrested for "disturbing the peace" behind this in the last couple of years, most notably trombonist Glenn David Andrews. Dr. John even recorded a tune on his new album called "My People Need a Second Line."

Petty police harrasment notwithstanding though, the culture remains strong. There's a parade pretty much every sunday during 'parade season' (roughly sept. to may). I had a band blast by outside my front door just a couple of weeks ago.
