Poor Des Moines. While I used to refer to it as the murder capital of Iowa I also have referred to it as the oyster capital of Iowa. This latter description due to barges of oysters being shipped up from the gulf and fed to lawmakers in Iowa City in order to promote the change in location of the capital.
Now I had never heard of it as "shitface", Iowa so this is a new one. LA .. Eat your heart out. http://www.etymonline.com/index.php?...earchmode=none Des Moines city in Iowa, U.S., named for Fr. Rivière des Moines, the river that flows past it, which traditionally is derived from Fr. des moines "of the monks," in reference to missionaries, but this probably is a fur trappers' folk-etymologizing of a name of the native people who lived there. The place appears in a 1673 text as Moinguena, and historians believe this represents Miami-Illinois mooyiinkweena, literally "shitface," from mooy "excrement" + iinkwee "face;" a name given by the Peoria Indians (whose name has itself become a sort of insult) to their western neighbors. It is not unusual for Indian peoples to have hostile or derogatory names for others, but this seems an extreme case. |

So that's why it smells funny in Iowa? However, the "shitface" label comes from one tribe of indians putting down another tribe. |

Dairy operations have an odor but the hog operations will make you gag. Our biggest problem is people moving from the city to rural areas and complaining when the combines raise too much dust or the neighbor starts farrowing pigs in an adjacent barnyard that had been there for 100 years. I live in a rural area, been to some of the operations you described. I still think rotten milo is the worst smell. Granted that comes off where hog shit doesn't. |

I doubt if you have ever smelled rotten soybeans. The only thing worse than rotten soy is nuc mon.... fish heads fermented in a barrel, juice drained off and used to season rice. Worked at a salmon processing plant for a summer too. edit to add i have been calf high in rotten soybeans and corn. hog crap, chicken excrement, cow dung, and horse manure are not unfamiliar with me and I still think dog shit smells worse. |

rotten milo is worse than rotten soybeans on a 100 degree day. Most boat captains when ready to go out into the gulf would hunt down his crew, and check the bars to get them drunk to help get them back on board for another go of it. And most crews after a trip would burn their clothes, and buy new ones. Washing did not get rid of the smell. |

Worked in south Louisiana back when at a shipyard, there was a pogiy processing plant abt one mile away that would make fly's drop dead in mid flight. Had a pogiy boat pull into the yard for some kind of repairs that was near hell of a smell. ![]() |
