Default Yard Sale ups and downs
mods- if this needs to be moved to bartering thread, ok.

The last couple weeks have been pretty near a bust for me. No real decent scores and yet I put in a fair number of hours- 5 each Saturday.

I was figuring I would give it a break yesterday when I found nothing good after 4 hours. I stopped in one place where they were moving and wanted to sell nearly everything. Alas, they would not part with their coins... but she took my number in case they had a change of heart.... she requested it. Normally I won't give it.

Another hunter heard me and began to tell a story. I contained my impatience and listened. She was a chubby ethnic looking woman who was a professional treasure hunter at these little asset mines. She said that she stopped at a place a while back... maybe years ago by the way she said it. And there were large glass bottles in the front yard. She described them as the kind I use for fermenting wine.... 4 or 6 gallon.... but they were painted. She asked about them and the owner said she could have them for $4 each.

At this point I was thinking, so what? I really would not be interested in painted glass bottles that had been sitting out in someone's front yard for maybe years.... in fact they were probably put there by the previous owner of the house.

She said her family... I guess husband and boys... were not happy with her bargain and mad at how heavy they were to load in her car. She gave me this funny look and said the back of the car went down to the ground. I was thinking they got themselves 3 large bottles loaded with dirt, water and slime. Then she told me: "When we got home we found that they were filled with coins. There was over $4,000 in coins (face value)."

On my leg back home I stopped in an area that had an advertised sale. I never made it there... but saw it in passing... another dump. But I followed a couple signs to two other dumps and then a strange little "estate sale" sign. By now it was near noon and good things are usually gone very early. She had an interesting silver shot cup with 99% Ag stamped on it. She wanted more than Iwould pay for it and there was noassurance it was silver. She told me she had a silver set that sold earlier. Of course.

Lesson: hit early and first any estate sales or moving sales.

found a bone saw for $3.

it's sharp - managed to cut myself on it.

it's like an over-sized hack-saw.

might go back & get it.

the direction of the blade is reversed. is that normal for a bone-saw - for the blades to be 180 degrees different from a hack-saw ?

Sterling is good.

I found a few things this weekend. At one location, the owner was cleaning out. He had a box of electrical odds & ends, and one for plumbing- $5 each. There was a very heavy fence roll 4 ft tall about 30ft long. He wanted $2. I saw this as a stand for my tomato plants. It will take the place of at least 10 cones that would cost $5 each and they are nowhere near the strength of this wire. I asked about coins and silverware. After a bit of talking it turned out that he had a collection of egg cups... sold most of them... but some might be sterling. They brought out a dozen and I found 2 sterling and one plated- but very nice. They are all about an oz (troy). I got the 3 for $30. So I count the sterling as 2 ozs for $30.

At another place I bought 2 silver quarters for $4.

And another- I got a 50 foot long heavy duty power cord 12-2 with ground, for $5.

At another place I got what must be 500 ft of tel-data cable for $20. The copper alone in there must weigh 20pounds.... but the wire is in top condition.

Yard sales in my area so far this season have been a huge bust, and I am the early arrival type. Hoping it picks up as the summer progresses..

Only things I've seen worth purchasing (but not what I'm looking for) is furniture.

Are you asking if they have old coins or silverware? Almost every excellent score I got was by asking.

I am going back to one today or tomorrow to price out their Sterling. I will give them a good price since they are neighbors.

Always. I've had excellent scores over the years, but for some reason, either people got wise or it's just not the right time yet.

Don't feel bad. That is why I started this thread. I was about to quit for a while. Many places I have visited only to see worthless junk. While out, I am also looking for potential partners who are alert to what is happening. They are usually the ones not selling good stuff. Most people are morons who have no clue about what is going to hit them this year. That makes one good find so much more prescious.

I'll keep at it, for sure. And will report any good finds once they are found
