UPDATE: Father shot by 4-year-old son charged in incident

MASON CITY. Iowa --- A Mason City father shot in the knee by his 4-year-old son has been charged in connection with the incident, according to Mason City police.

Christopher Upenieks, 29, 509 Fourth St. NE, was charged Friday with child endangerment, an aggravated misdemeanor, and allowing a minor access to a firearm, a serious misdemeanor, according to a press release from the Mason City Police Department.

On Feb. 27, officers found Upenieks in his parked truck at his home with a gunshot wound to his left knee. Upenieks had allegedly left the handgun unsecured in the truck and his 4-year-old son obtained the weapon and discharged it striking his father in the leg.

Upenieks was cited and released to appear in court.

EARLIER STORY

MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) --- A Mason City man is being treated for a gunshot wound to the knee after his 4-year-old son picked up a handgun and it fired.

Police say 29-year-old Christopher Upenieks (OOP-in-icks) was accidentally shot Monday afternoon when the boy found the unsecured weapon in his dad's truck, picked it up and it fired.

Upenieks was in his truck when police arrived. He was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Police say he had a valid permit to carry a gun.

The Iowa Department of Human Services was notified and police say there could be charges of child endangerment or leaving an unsecured loaded weapon within reach of a child. The incident remains under investigation. At what age is it appropriate to start teaching self-defense? OOP-in-icks needs a refresher course.

I know it!

The Communist STATE has been injured, because the father never paid for protection (Got a license) for his 4 yr old to carry a weapon. Therefore the COmmunist STATE has lost revenue generation. Remember, it isnt about right or wrong, it is about who has paid for protection in this RACKET.

And lastly......SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED. SHALL NOT BE INFRINGED.

The Communist STATE has been injured OOP-in-icks convicts himself. I can't imagine a 4 year old articulating "I shot daddy". The man goes to a hospital with a gunshot wound, when asked how he got it he had a choice of saying "my gun went off" or "my 4 y.o. picked up my gun and shot me". One statement labels him as accident prone while the other gets him a conviction.

Honestly speaking everbody can Monday morning quarterback this thing

The Father was negligent true....but in moment of being shot you really can't blame a person if they are not fully comopsed to answer questions with the intent to foul you up.r

I'm sorry this happened to the fellow...I just glad nothing happened to the kid

Just pointing out ... if there was an injury dad did it to himself. When you start talking best do it with the idea that whatever you say is going to be used against you so just don't say much.

Not really Monday morning quarterbacking but more examining the circumstances and learning from them. If you don't learn from the experiences of others then you had best be prepared to learn from your own experiences.

To quote my Momma:

An education is what you get when you do listen.

An experience is what you get when you don't.
