Default Right you SGS2 owners...
...has anyone managed to get the automatic brightness working like they want? It's much better at adjusting since the recent fix from Samsung, but it goes far too dark when inside in normal conditions. It looks like it goes down to minimal brightness when I'm in an artificially lit room and not pointing the phone at the lightbulb.

On a more positive note, the proximity sensor works properly in my new white one. Has anyone else with the black one found that the screen goes off when near your ear but you have to press the home button to get it back on? I thought as a complete guess that it might be struggling to detect the differences because of black plastic, although that's totally illogical.

As far as I know, Kies doesn't support wireless update of firmware.

I have brightness on automatic and I've always found the screen too bright, to be honest. I'd like to keep it at automatic but maybe have it biased down. By the way, did you know that if you turn off automatic brightness, you can slide your finger horizontally along the pull-down bar to adjust brightness?

I've hard that fluorescent lights throw proximity sensors for a bit of a loop so maybe the odd behavior you're seeing can be chalked up to varying behavior under incandescent vs. fluorescent lighting?

With regards to the proximity sensor, I have a black model and I have never had an issue with the way it works. It's exactly as you'd expect.

When you say kies, are you referring to OTA updates? Latest firmware supports it I believe:

I've had no issues with the proximity sensor on my white SGSII at all DM.

I was, and I stand corrected.

The proximity sensor works fine on my new one so I guess it was just a problem with the old one.

I know the old SGS only did updates over KIES when we had it which was utter turd. Good to know your new GSII is a little better.

Take a look on the xda forums and try a few custom roms! There's plenty to choose from and alot have tweaks to help with things like screen brightness. I know it's not for everyone, but i enjoy messing around with my SGS2 [thumbup]

I don't think I have an issue with beautiful widgets but I will disable them and see if that improves battery life. I actually use setcpu to set profiles for different scenarios. I find that 800mhz is enough for pretty much everything so during the day that's what I have it set to, at night I set it to a max of 500mhz, when plugged in and charging at 1200mhz. Doing that improved my battery life quite significantly.

As for the brightness the automatic adjustments do not work well for me. It's been quite sunny here the past month since got it and almost impossible to see the screen if it's not at full. Can be a bit hard even at the brightest setting to see in direct sunlight depending on what's on screen.
I might get a matte screen protector if I can find one locally that will hopefully make things a bit easier.

As far as I know it automatically throttles down in steps like those anyway.
Yes it does but I under volted each step so each step consumes less power.

Just manually adjust brightness by holding then sliding the notification bar. Auto isn't really accurate on any phone 100% of the time.

It works almost flawlessly on the iPhone 4 (and 3GS from what I remember).

It also works fine on the SGS2, the problem is that it sets the brightness to low when it changes, not that it doesn't change when it should.

*sigh* It worked well enough for me without complaint. Is that better?

Yes!

You save some extra battery power by manually adjusting brightness only when needed instead of having it analyse the ambient light and adjust at every moment.

My personal experience is that battery life improves as I often forgot to lower the battery life. I had it set to manual for a year or so. It wasn't a massive increase, maybe a couple of hours, but the convenience of not having to go into settings to change it all the time was worth it. Saying that, the SGS2 makes it very easy to change the display brightness so I might just stop moaning and do it myself.

Install a custom ROM and you can set the light levels on the automatic brightness to whatever you want.

Just got mine today and OH MY GOD this thing is absolutely beautiful. It is so fast and smooth and the screen is to die for. Makes my EVO 4G complete and utter rubbish as the UKers would say.

Sorry I know that is off topic and of no help to this thread. I am still learning this thing. Way different than my EVO.
