Default I got my first Credit Card, what should I buy?
From online. What's a nice gift I can buy myself that's online-store-exclusive?

Do yourself a favor and throw it away immediately. You will thank me in a few years.

Wouldn't go quite that far but you'd be daft to just use it to "buy stuff". I just use mine for online purchases when other payment isn't possible and make sure I pay the bill off each month - or at a mininum, as quickly as possible if I can't quite cover it - like this month!
Remember, they make their money from the people that don't pay their balance off and so have to fork out huge amounts of interest.

As a tool, it'll be very useful but make sure you control it - not the other way round.

Its fine IF you pay it off IN FULL every month. Which I did for the first few years I had it. But then I started to get careless with it. Next thing I knew I had over $5000 on it (albeit mainly school related stuff) and at 21% interest its next to impossible to pay it off.

One of my mates from college has just got a credit card [thumbdown] worse thing he ever did. He's spending money like theres no tomorrow, has to pay off his college tuition fees and still keeps going spending money. For many, they simply remove the actual value of money and when its all gone, its hard to get it back than people imagine.

its all about control, i've had credit cards since I was legal to own one, so about 7 years now, the first one was linked to my dads account with a 5 figure limit, never really used it, still have it now.

I have my own CC with a limit of about £600, I always pay it up in full if i buy anything which is usually computer hardware crap.

I have 2 debit cards too, which I used exclusively, but someone told me I should build up my credit rating by using the CC and paying it off straight away, so I do that now.

Anyway, Oblisk, get a Plush Headcrab from the Valve store, shipping is a bitch though.

Be carefull though. I am not familiar with the card you have, but when you are a loyal customer that uses it and pays back nice on time they increase the amount of credit without you knowing it.

If you than use it more often you could be getting more in depth than you actually wanted, it goes pretty uknowingly.

It has happened to me anyway...

Whats the deal with paying it off etc.?? i always have credit cards linked to an account which pays them off immediately (as soon as the cc company sends the bill)

dont just buy something you probably do not need/want. use it reasonable. why dont you just go someplace to eat and pay with the card.

Exactly.
What is it with you people who get a credit card and think it's a wallet extension?? It's the same money you're spending. If you spend more than you can afford you obviously have a problem, not the credit card!...

Actually it's good to use a credit card rather than cash or a debit card in some circumstances. That is if you are spending over £100, you get added protection in law.....at least in the UK you do.

You just need to be carefull with credit cards and not spend more than you can afford. I have a couple and I hardly use them.

I would like to get a credit card to buy certain things online and also to pay for things abroad. It's not much fun getting stung with a charge having to go to a cash machine when on holiday. Plus you get added protection on purchases, I'm seriously thinking about upgrading my bank account.

Why don't you just get a Visa check card? It does all those things except its debited from your account.

As long as you use it as credit card and not a debit you get all the protection a normal Visa would get. Atleast thats what my bank told me.

Yep, every purchase I make with my Visa debit card goes through that "Verified by Visa" thing where I have a separate password etc.

I would probably spend 1/2 your limit and pay it off within a reasonable amount of time, it will build your credit score and you won't be killing yourself because it shouldn't be that much to pay off either [thumbup]

Why accept a card with such an insane interest rate? I mean, that rate is FAR tooo high; and it had to have been presented to you in writing before getting the card...

Agreed. My very first card was only 17% - after a few years of paying it off, you should have a card at about 12% at the most.
