Default Cash Discount
The fact that 1/2 of all cashiers can't count out change makes me against it.

I was in a store the other day and the women in front of me was holding out her wallet with cash in hand and the clerk told her the charge and she pulled out a credit card. At this point the clerk quoted her a slightly higher price and the woman asked why the price went up. The clerk said it was because he thought she was paying in cash and there was a cash discount. The woman got upset saying that they shouldn't charge more if using a credit card. The clerk said that wasn't the case. The credit card price was the normal price. But if you paid in cash you got a discount. The woman thought about it for a second and they looked up and said. "Ok that's different then". I tried not to break out laughing.

So traditionally credit card surcharges have been resisted in the market due to customer reactions. Do you think a cash discount is a valid way around a customer backlash.

Is a cash discount fair in your opinion?

Do you think it will catch on?

IF so, will it reverse the downward trend of cash transactions?

I would like to see more of this.
My grandfather expects there to be a cash discount often, and asks if there is one (and has for years).

I pretty much never use cash.

I'm the same as Slowwy.

I love the idea of a cash discount. If a store offers me a cash discount, then I'll be more likely to come back and continue to be a patron.

Interesting how they swap the credit card use surchage into being a standard and turn cash into a discount...

However, I've found very few places (usually only Chinese-run family establishments) that charge to use a credit card or require a minimum purchase to use a card. As an AMEX customer, however, I have been refused and had to use other cards, though.

And no, I never use cash.

I always try to use credit. I don't like germ trails.
Cards are run through the machines all day. The cards were touched by people just like the money was touched. Invalid response!

While in general I agree, now that they've switch to self swiping, I bet it's not as bad as it used to be in that regards.

Well it is common practice to raise prices temporarily so you can mark it down and call it a SALE. Who doesn't want to buy it on SALE.

it depends on the place or what i am buying. if you go into a big chain store, the chances are pretty minimal in my experience. if it's a small trader, then there's always room for some negotiation. these people usually prefer to receive cash and will give you something for that too.

For me, it's more about ID theft than it is "paper trail."
The fewer organizations and individuals who have access to my CC info, the better.

Consider the fact that no organization, no matter how high tech or important (governments, banks, Sony, and many more), seems immune to having that info hacked. Now consider the slack-jawed idiot behind the counter at your local retailer . Whether it's due to hackers or stupidity is irrelevant. Those CC digits have value.

Credit card companies charge up to 3% per transaction. So a cash "discount" is reasonable.
So it's only a 3% discount for carrying cash around? That doesn't sound like something to get excited about.

As far as I know, cash discounts are illegal in the US. That's why you very rarely see them. Why the credit card industry should have their business model enshrined in law is another matter altogether, of course.

Are you serious? 3% adds up!

I buy everything with my credit card BECAUSE I earn 1% (or more depending on the store) on all purchases!
Hopefully I'll never be someone who lives in the ghetto and needs to worry about every single penny.

You mightaswell be living in the poor house with that attitude. Frugality will take you far.

I guess price-shopping is also beneath you

He's a Euro, he's likely on the dole and hasn't paid for anything.
No he's not. He's an American.

Really? He exhibits the 'can do' attitude of Greece.

I'm an American... and not in the military... so how am I on the dole? Well I suppose there's always one. Last I checked Americans worked hard and loved their country.

Is this like when you were trying to argue that planned obsolescence is a good thing for the consumer?

Admit it, gribbler. You're a rich **** or you don't have to pay for anything because mommy and daddy get it for you.
Yeah, if someone isn't desperate for a 1% bonus every time they buy something they must be rich

Someone could drop a nickel and you'd scramble to get it

OMG... I'm not as cheap as some people so I must be lazy?

Oh and apparently I'm an America hater
