Apparently they have some cooling for it, just not as much as they'd like, the evacuation being 'better safe than sorry' although the expert I mentioned earlier was commenting on how safe the design is, especially it's containment vessel.

Huge fire in Kesennuma city, like something from an old war movie after a firebombing. I hope the people got out of there OK, the ones that were still alive.

Anyway, 4:30am here - off to bed to count my blessings.
Night all [yawn]

Is that the oil refinery?

I think they're going to vent the nuclear reactor that's under rising pressure.

Indeed, the one in Ichihara. That blaze is massive, wow.

Yeah hopefully the nuclear plant is under control!

I just watched BBC News and saw an earthquake had hit Japan.
I then watched Sky News and saw a tsunami had hit Japan.
And as if the bastards didn't have it bad already - according to Dave, the US have just dropped an atom bomb on them.

Wow that fire at the refinerey looks HOT! [surrender]

What I find amazing is that in all this footage I barely see anyone. Seems to be a very good thing, at least I hope. No/not many dead bodies floating about.

The next big after shock is going to be insurance.

Japan says radiation levels surged outside nuclear plant

I'm quoting 1 part of it.
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/as_japan_...VwbGFudHRybw--

Japan's nuclear safety agency said pressure inside one of six boiling water reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi plant had risen to 1.5 times the level considered normal. Hours after the evacuation order, the government announced that the plant in northeastern Japan will release slightly radioactive vapor from the unit to lower the pressure in an effort to protect it from a possible meltdown.

2149: The Kyodo news agency is now citing a safety panel as saying that the radiation level inside one of the reactors at the Fukushima-Daiichi nuclear plant is 1,000 times higher than normal. This from BBC website.

(Reuters) - Radiation detected at a central control unit at Tokyo Electric Power Co's No.1 reactor at Fukushima Daiichi plant is not at a level that would require workers at the plant to evacuate, a trade ministry official said on Saturday

Still says "The radiation at the control unit has risen to about 1,000 times the normal level, the official said" though.

Yeah, but none of us are experts on nuclear reactors, so we don't really know what that means exactly

Very true. Which is probably why I'm confused that people within 10km are being evacuated if the plant workers are safe.

True, but any news update which contains the words and terms:

Radiation, Nuclear, 1000 times normal

Cannot be good imho.
