Battery life is shocking! From 100% at 9am to 60% at 11.50am without it being used for more than ten minutes.

I'm sure this can't all be down to the phone having a crap battery! I have push mail and other usual stuff on but this even makes the iPhone 3G look parsimonious!

Take it back to the store! You said it was laggy and the battery life looks abysmal! For comparison, my phone (HTC Desire), is up and running all day, receiving emails, updates, browsing etc, and I still never hit 50% battery life when I go to bed.

I'll be getting mine in in a week or so. I know there has been a lot of issues about the battery life reading some of the posts over at xda has put my mind at rest in regards to getting this phone.

There are some strange issues with the phone though like how the battery consumption goes through the roof after you have taken a picture and closed the camera app where as if you use a 3rd party camera app there is no such issue.

That sounds terrible... I'd return it asap...

My iPhone 3G ate battery when I first got it as well. I may have hidden running processes or something.

It's not laggy as such, just not as slick as the iPhone4.

I like to give things a proper go instead of picking something up and hating it immediately.

Give it 3 discharges and charges and see how it is.

As mentioned let the battery go through a few charges as I have noticed phones tend to hold a better charge after that. Also, keep in mind that while you think you may not be using the phone much, people have a tendency to use their new phone a lot more than they think they do when they first get it. I am not saying that is necessarily the case with you, I have just seen plenty of friends do it.

I usually would play with it constantly but it's been on my desk at work mainly.

I thought the live wallpaper would eat a load of battery, but apparently it's only responsible for 2% of the total use.

The ergonomics of the phone aren't a patch on the iPhone for sure. Just adjusting the volume seems to need two hands, same with everything else.

Not sure if you have downloaded process view/killer app yet. Try it out and see what is running and how much ram is being consumed. there is also a widget you can download that tells you what frequency the CPU is running at, see if it throttles it self and how high its avg load is.
My dell from ATT used up a lot of juice when I first got it but once i changed the rom and cut down on its memory footprint it got much better. I can go about 30 hours until it dies (with a little bit of angry birds, my screen uses a lot of power) and it is synced with my work and personal email accounts.

You shouldn't really have to **** around with process and memory usage to get an acceptable battery life out of a phone. I'd give it a few more charge cycles then take it back if it's still crap.

Live wallpapers eat a lot more juice than what the phones says imo.

You say that, but that's exactly what you had to do on the iPhone 3G.

A smartphone is a computer. A computer often gets a memory hogging app stuck. Should I take my computer back because a third party app keeps the processor working long after it should?

I would get the Desire HD. It can be controlled with one hand, and the battery is decent after the first few charges. If you root the phone, you can have more control over the apps that suck power.

I've used one a few times. It's too big IMO. Plus, it's a lot laggier than this one (although the users might have had a load of background apps running).

Depends if it's a compromise to kill the memory/battery hog I suppose.

Personally, I want something with a bit of grunt next phone I get. My current Blackberry feel's overwhelmed by anything other than calls and texts.

The problem you'll find is that any smartphone with a lot of grunt struggles to last long.

People criticised the iPhone when it came out because most people had slow phones that didn't eat a lot of battery. Now though it looks like Apple did incredibly well to get so much life out of a battery.

Yeah, there's always a trade-off. The Blackberry lasts the best part of a week with light use.
