Default Thread in which we discuss The Wine
The last time I toured Napa Valley I was underage, unfortunately.

Pretty sights, though.

I'm no wine expert. I'm hoping to learn from your expertise.

Yes, SW of Meknes. But it is also the name of a winery. Or at least, that was what was plastered all over the bottle. Besides, I'm not an expert.

eg.

I guess that's like when you get something called "Australian Red" or whatever.

I know very little about American wines, but if you're ever interested in other areas just shout.

Currently drinking Chateau Musar 2002. The greatest thing to come out of the Middle East- all major religions included.

The 2001, predictably enough, was very good.

Only one I remember is Robert Mondavi, but seeing as even I know that winery, it's probably got a bad rep like Budweiser to the wine experts.

Maybe I'll try and find a bottle of 2002 and compare them!

I don't have a ton of wine experience, I was there with my wife 6 months or so ago. There's a newer winery -- Hill Family -- that we liked for the $. They don't have the old-school winery tour, just a store in town, but the young kid is a pretty entertaining story teller.

It depends on what your tastes are. Several well known wine critics have repeatedly said they like "big Zins", that is ones with lots of tanins in them, and then gave very high marks to makers who made that type of Zin. The result is most of the wineries are now chasing those scores and think if they also make Zin with lots of tanins then they'll also get a high score. The problem is Zin was always a nice wine to drink right when you get it but if you add lots of tanins then you have to age it so that kind of defeats the whole stated purpose of Zin; which is supposed to be inexpensive good quality table wine which is good to drink as soon as you buy it.

Yeah, lots of great Italian Primitivos out there, and really good value. I don't buy a lot of Californian wine over here as it tends to be relatively expensive, or quite crap bulk stuff but as we'll be in California...

If you like that kind of wine (like me!) you might want to take a look at Ribera del Deuro in Spain. Not much from there at the cheapest end of the market, but some really good big fruity wines. Mostly made from "Tinto" which is Tempranillo by another name.

I'm not much of a wine drinker, but based on the whites I have tasted this one is excellent:

Yeah, that's been a popular inexpensive white at Costco for several years. Really it was the first widely popular and well known New Zealand wine in the US.

I became partial to some of the more pricey Argentine stuff. Reccommended:

2004 Yacochuya Malbec, Michel Rolland, La Salta
2005 Val de Flores Malbec, Michel Rolland, Mendoza
2005 Cuvelier Los Andes Grand Malbec
2002 Nicolas Catena Zapata

Yup, I get it from Costco. This one is another favorite of mine, although not available at Costco:

With respect to wine areas I've actually visited, I've only been out to Mission Hill. Unfortunately the wine is not for export. I went in 2005, and their Merlot I quite liked.

2007 Cabernet Merlot

New Release! A full-bodied wine with complex notes of dark cocoa and spice combine with rich plum and ripe cherries on a layered palate. This wine has a long finish and pairs well with a range of meat dishes such as lamb stew, roast duck, and grilled beef, as well as a variety of aged cheeses.
