wife wanted a grocery getter

Seems OK, but I'm not sure of her logic - you could buy an aweful lot of petrol (gosoline for you illiterates on the wrong side of the Atlantic http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/devil1.gif) for what the car is going to be costing you - plus, there's the question of winter driving, which may restrict it's use if you get much snow.

Its what they call a long term return [yes]

and if you think about it if its being used daily and the big snowmobile gets used only in winter then it balances out and then begins to become economically viable

The Blazers gas milage must have been bad for a 2.7 auto to be better. How many miles would you have to do before it becomes cheaper to do the shopping in the Dodge?

Spellcheck? Meh![yawn]

2000 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L/auto
Sell it. Seriously, that engine is a POS, google it! Engine sludge, FTW!

Blazer City: 15 MPG - Highway 17 MPG

Intrepid City: 19 MPG Highway: 29 MPG

I read about the sludge, but knowing the people we got it from, I have a complete history of all work and maint records..
Make sure the breathers and oil separaters are clear and regular oil changes should avoid most problems.

If it cheered up your dismal existance, it was worthwhile [thumbup]

If you're that hard pressed for amusement, check out my other posts - I expect there'll be a lot more typo's http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/cool1.gif

I'd get rid of it. Even if it had the 3.2/3.5L in there.

1.) The 2.7L motor is a bad engine. Even if you take care of it, you'll run into problems.

2.) Dodge's 4-Speed is also bad news as well, which is why with the 3.2/3.5 Id sell it.

If you got it for a steal, keep it, but if you paid what the car is worth, sell it for what it is worth and get something else.
You want a reliable grocery go getter with great economy and more power, get a Buick/Pontiac with the Series II 3800 engine.
It is rated the same economy, has a lot more power, one of the most reliable engines ever built (OHV), and very good transmission to boot. We are driving a LeSabre atm and get 24mpg average city and 28mpg average on vacation with it being loaded down, both mpgs with A/C on.

Im sure you could maybe find a Buick Regal GS for the same price if not a little more. [thumbup]

If you do keep it, get those headlights cleaned up! [yes]

IMO stay away, its a dodge. My buddy has worked in a shop for over 5 years now, and out of all the cars domestic or import one thing shows up the most often for major repairs, dodge, Chrysler, Plymouth.

icyfreshy 08-22-2010 09:05 AM

When you say grocery getter, this is what I was thinking honestly.

First of all, congrats on the purchase for your wife.

However, if it were up to me, I would have gone for a Camry or Civic if I were buying a 10 year old car. My mom had 3 Camrys in her lifetime, and each went over 200K with little to no problems over the course of the ownership.

I'm not wishing anything bad on you, but I've known some people who have had awfully expensive tranny problems with Intrepids. Something to do with them engaging the next gear before releasing the prior, or something like that.

VINPELA 08-22-2010 03:07 PM

I was not just being an ass either. I would have told you to enjoy your sweet new ride... Anyway, I used to own a later 90's Intrepid as a beater years ago, and it was comfortable, the 3.5 had some power, and it was a solid car... but I sold it the moment it started shifting funny sometimes. The 3.5 is a decent engine, it's belt driven, and if I recall, it's non-interference... that 2.7 though... seriously... just spare yourself.
