well we must have picked a wrongun with Afghanistan [rolleyes]
china will make out like a bandit on those afghan resources though.... in like 30 years. I imagine by that time, the afghans wish it was still the US and Britain/Nato in there. China's military will be strong, and they have a long history of not caring about lives.

Russia tried and failed with Afghanistan... so your argument would be pretty moot [yes]

russia didn't have a billion people, did they? Plus, they were already bankrupt. It was an all in move on their part. As I said, china has lives to spare.

I mean hell, just US and Britain could eradicate everyone there if that was our intention.

It looks like the west (incl. Israel) is going to p*ssy out about August 21st, kinda disappointing.

For those who haven't heard:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100817...20100817120240
lol, I expect nothing less from an Israeli. You find it "kinda disappointing" that Israel & the west won't attack Iran? You obviously know nothing about the Iranian regime and middle eastern politics. If you did, you would know that they would never have the balls to attack ANY other country since they are at war with their own people, I doubt they can afford to go to war with the west.

But it's nice to see another Israeli pushing for another war, good on ya.

I'm obviously not going to direct any sort of logic towards you, as your kind can't understand it.

Please do try, I look forward to understanding the "logic" of a person who is disappointed at the lack of a 3rd war in the region. This should be good.

These days I have no idea why we are fighting this war. I know Australia is there simply there because the American's are. So it's more about keeping a good political relationship with the American's.

I agree with chasing the bad guys that are responsible for 9/11. I can't remember the last time this war had anything to do with 9/11. Bin Laden hasn't been found. Of course finding Bin Laden I think would mean America would have to then justify its occupation in these countries after finding him, which I think they want to stay long term.

The Iraq war. What a mess, but I think now that we have destabilised the country we got to fix it. You can't just up and leave and let the filth take over.

I agree with that, but it's hard to see what the US is doing to actually "fix" he problems. I mean does anyone know exactly what they are doing there now?

As for Afghanistan I heard the Taliban stoned a couple caught for adultery recently in the north of the country so it seems the Taliban are back to running a few areas here and there.

For those interested, listen to the interview with the first guy, Mir Rosen. I've never seen him before but the guy really knows what he's talking about regarding the Iraqi war

I'm not sure where you got this fact from but it's not going to be fabricating plutonium it's a uranium reactor.
Plutonium is a natural end product from fissioning uranium in a reactor, so Iran will certainly have the ability to produce it once their reactor is online. However, extracting it from the fuel rods is not an easy process and, as far as the IAEA knows, Iran doesn't have the facilities to do this.

But why would you want plutonium when you have the ability to enrich uranium? Mass needed for criticality is far less - in other words, you need less of it to go boom.

Interesting. I'm trying to find something similar to this but related to how many human lives have been lost during the past 7 years, civilian and military, on all sides.

I read somewhere that every year 160 US soldiers commit suicide in Iraq alone. I think that must be unheard of in US warfare, except for maybe Vietnam, I know that was a pretty horrible one.

That 160 figure is for all active-duty personnel, not just those in Iraq. Which makes it a little more than 20 per 100,000 per year. Though that's only slightly higher than the civilian suicide rate, its the highest for the military in the 30 years they've has been keeping track. No idea about how that compares to the Vietnam war, since there's lots of myths, half truths and bullshit-based extrapolations everywhere you look, because the government didn't keep track of soldier's suicides at the time.

A little interesting news for the thread,

After Seven Years, Final U.S. Combat Brigade Leaves Iraq.

http://www.foxnews.com/world/2010/08...e-leaves-iraq/

KHABARI CROSSING, Kuwait -- As their convoy reached the barbed wire at the border crossing out of Iraq on Wednesday, the soldiers whooped and cheered. Then they scrambled out of their stifling hot armored vehicles, unfurled an American flag and posed for group photos.

For these troops of the 4th Stryker Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, it was a moment of relief fraught with symbolism. Seven years and five months after the U.S.-led invasion, the last American combat brigade was leaving Iraq, well ahead of President Barack Obama's Aug. 31 deadline for ending U.S. combat operations there.

I don't like it,it's getting to the point though where I think we should either get out,or start trying more decisively to win and just go with being very aggressive/unapologetic about it.

umm, I think that has pretty much been the US's approach for the last 7 years bud, and it hasn't got them very far.
