Lol, yeah I pretty much make sure if a friend or family ask for help I try to get away with the minimum amount of help from my part.

ok, not really sure if you are agreeing with me or being condescending. I take this kind of attitude in network administration. If I don't want a user to do something I make it so they can't do it. This has two outcomes. The users are much happier because it takes a lot of the guess work out of where to save things. Set default paths etc so the users just click save and don't really care where it's saving. Also, it makes my job easier as I'm not looking on workstations for user files and the PCs perform at 100% all the time. No worries about rogue software being installed.

I just had a customer walk in with a flat panel monitor saying it needed cleaning cause its full of viruses. I was nice, hooked up the monitor to show them it was fine, and that i needed the tower/box part instead http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/tongue1.gif

This is why I didn't go the computer science route. I do it on the side as well, but man... people are just totally oblivious to what they are doing.

Try being a mechanic professionally, and a computer builder as a hobby. I pretty much have to fix everything. My in-laws FINALLY got someone else to work on their damn cars, lol *shoots self*

Answer to what? Why you're an idiot? Why they didn't listen to what their various courses told them to do? Why they didn't follow their writen directions? Each course had allocated server space on specified drives.

Agreed - it pisses me off no end that our IT dept don't seem to understand why it's not a good idea to have Outlook archive one's mail to the C: drive rather than the network drive [rolleyes]

They're probably terrified that the many users with their multiple GB mailboxes will kill the network/fill the server in seconds.

If the network isn't robust enough to handle the data the next best thing is quotas. [thumbup]

I know this is POP3, but I have never had an exchange account without a quota. It stops people leaving all sorts of crap floating around.

That somewhat depends on the organisation - the high ups in ours just ignore IT directives, and we can't force things like that on them. ****ed up, but there you go.

Any manager that thinks it's fine to set policies and then ignore them should be replaced immediately IMO.

I've been lucky enough that when something like that happens I'm able to make them see my point of view. Not much you can do if they won't listen though.
