Default Car Shopping Time... RIP Altima Coupe
Well, compliments of the transmission tearing itself apart in my car , due to the extent of the destruction my insurance has given me the option to declare my car totaled. My A/C had 89,000+ miles on it, so I was already starting to consider selling it or trading it off for something newer.

So... I'm back on the market for a new daily driver. My only requirements are that it be sporty with 4 doors... and from one of 3 manufacturers: Nissan, Mitsubishi or Subaru. There's no possibility of switching from those three, because in the event we move to WV when LadyM completes her residency, I would like to have a dealer closeby. That quickly omits BMW, which is pretty much the only other option I'd consider.

So here's what I'm considering:

2010 Nissan Maxima SV w/ Sport Package

2010 Mitsubishi EVO GSR
2010 Mitsubishi EVO MR

2010 Subaru WRX (Wagon) w/ Premium Package
2010 Subaru WRX STI

Now, the Maxima is what it is... there's not much that I'd do to it aside from maybe the Stillen lower front lip, skirts and rear corners... and their exhaust and an AEM CAI.

The EVO or WRX would be another story entirely... I'm relatively familiar with the EVOs, knowing that the MR has just a few upgraded components to make it what it is. I'd likely get the GSR, knowing that I'd be putting better components in it than the MR has anyways.

The WRX is a different beast to me... My family has owned a few Subies over the past 30 years, though never myself personally. After I chose to purchase my EVO VIII in 2003 over the STI, I haven't look back in their direction until now.

So the big question: What would I be LOSING by starting with the WRX Premium rather than the STI? I know the 6Spd tranny... but what else? Does anyone know of a side-by-side comparison other than what Subaru themselves provide, particularly from the tuners point of view?

Spanks! [thumbup]

I think you might be too smart to buy a Japanese car, no?

Well, it resulted in a catastrophic failure taking most of the drivetrain with it...

Well, it's either that or an American car, which I'd prefer asphyxiating on my own vomit before buying, to be perfectly honest. The only European respresentation in north-central WV is VW, which I'd prefer the vomit option over as well.

In my time, I've owned 5 Nissans and 2 Mitsus... I beat them to hell and back and they've never let me down, covering over 500,000 miles in the last 14 years. Most A/C owners have issues with CVT trannies in

Your insurance covers you for mechanical failure? I want some of that.

I had no issues with the transmission until recently, which were due to outside factors.

Now, back on topic... The three choices are Nissan, Mitsubishi and Subaru. I do not care for, nor will I buy anything else at this time. [no]

Personally I would go with the GSR. I watched the evo vs sti top gear review and it's quite convincing.

BS, no way in hell any insurance totals a car for transmission only. They didnt make a altima coupe until 2008 and even with 89k miles on it its still worth 16,500 so no way in hell they would TL that car for a tranny unless it literally exploded the whole friggen car.

What about a used Nissan GTR?

I know you have the 370Z with crazy mods in the works but a GTR is very good for spending 5-10k on and get 550awhp

Not sure how it compares to the new price of the ones you are looking at though.

Also, I have had two Impreza STI and we have had 6 Subarus total in the family so I would go with the STI if the ones you list are the only options.

From a WRX you get better gearbox, better shocks, better anti roll, better diffs and a host of other things (I'm sure you can google a full list ).

Plus you can still spend a little cash on intake, turbo back exhaust and a cobb ap or alike to squeeze some extra juice out!

I'm going to go out on a limb and say the 4-door requirement would make this rather difficult.

1 - New GTR is coupe only.
2 - R34 GTR 4 door was quite rare, may not ever have been any left hand drive models either. Plus... they're getting a little long in the tooth now.

Meh did not read 4 door only. And nobody in their right mind would want anything but the R35 model.

Go with the STI then [thumbup]

$16.5K? LOL, maybe with a clean title... it was wrecked back in October of 2007, seeing that they've been on lots since May of that year. [rolleyes]

And the damage? When the tranny blew, it also took the crank, two connecting rods, shoved a piston north and cracked an axle... So by the time they replaced pretty much all of the engine compartment, yeah. It's totaled. Why would I lie about having to buy a new car because my old one is toast?

If I wanted to buy a new car, I'd go buy a new car whenever I damn well wanted. I loved my A/C, and had to call Stillen and cancel an order for new brake rotors due to the loss. I could care less about the insurance part! The $$$ is not the issue, ass.

I was a big fan of Nissan for years, but they seemed to be getting a little worse every time I bought a newer, more expensive one. I finally gave up after my 05 Pathfinder had problems with the transfer case and ABS breaking right after the warranty expired. I then looked at Subarus but my brother in law's motor blew on his WRX with just 75k so I decided to give them a pass- I'm driving a Jetta now and it is the best car I've ever owned by quite a margin, I think I'm hooked on German cars- probably try an Audi next (don't care for the 2011 Jetta), but there's that whole vomit thing. I guess I would suggest trying one of the Mitsus, but didn't you have problems with an EVO before?

Only problem i really had with my EVO is burning the factory clutch out insanely fast after I started modifying it (to be expected), and the dealers taking back their promise to continue servicing the vehicle even though it had aftermarket parts on it. The same folks went bankrupt and their dealership purchased by another group shortly after I had dumped the car. Now I wouldn't care, but I didn't have the time or a place to work on it back then.
