I haven't heard nor seen the second system so I cannot comment on it but the first one I have heard a few times. The weakest point of the first system is easily the center channel. Inside the very thin and low profile enclosure is one driver which sounds very anemic and tinny. The center channel is one of the most important channels in a 5.1 system and unfortunately, with HTIBs, there is really no upgrade path.

how do you feel about the rest of the system? i have other speakers i could use for the center channel. its a shame my str-k740p took a dump. im leaning towards the str-dh500 kit but at half the wattage of the bdv-e300 im not sure how that would affect the sound quality. also the BDV system supports dolby truehd and dts-hd ma but only if i play bluerays in the device. anything i stream to the ps3 would just be regular dts or dolby digital 5.1. the str-dh500 just supports dts and DD. i like the style of the tall speakers vs the small speakers that seem to come in nearly every htib.
