Default Ugh, at work on a saturday
Well here i am, at work, on a saturday. Anyone else here working today? Kind of annoying to have to be working on saturday. All i wanted was 2 days to sleep in, to not be arsed to all my butt in at 8am in the morning to just sit here and do nothing. Is that to much to ask?

I am at work. My average day is 10 hours long (if you count weekends, 12 on weekdays)... and my average work week is slightly under 7 days... I take, on average, maybe 1 full weekend off every 3-4 months... and if I'm lucky, I get a full day off every month or so. My work involves standing while hunched over a bench that is 6 inches shorter than it should be for someone my height, developing a cervical spine malformation, which will likely cost me boatloads of pain, and tens of thousands of dollars in orthopedic surgery to repair later on.

... and when I said (after two years of such conditions with no vacation), that I was going to take 10 days off for my honeymoon, I was told that I had my priorities mixed up.

That is disgusting ! I would be seriously pissed off if my boss said that about my honeymoon!!

I would prefer to work Tuesday to Saturday and have Sunday and Monday off. You can get so much more stuff done faster (shopping and so on) if you don't have to be limited by opening hours and other people in the way.

Believe me when I say, that your Boss does not appreciate you and never will and if someone better comes along he will kick you out at the drop of a hat. [thumbdown]

I used to believe that Loyalty to an employer counted for my continued employment being a little bit easier after several years of hard graft, but alas I was wrong, very wrong!

I worked for my last security company for nearly 3 years and did every shift I was asked to do, drove 100 miles (there and back) to cover people who were off sick, at a moments notice. Worked nearly 2 years doing upwards of 84 hours a week, sometimes hit 130 hours in a week (all I got out of that was CFS).

I missed out on tons of stuff to cover my bosses a$$, daughters birthday, Marriage anniversary, parties with family and a ton of other stuff I'd loved to have attended, but I thought since my boss depended on me so much, that I'd be looked after If it came to any job losses in the firm, but pretty much like every other boss I've ever had (bar a couple), The Ba$tard sh*t on me and 3 of my friends and we were unfair dismissed without notice, holiday pay or redundancy (the guy owes us a combined £3 - 4K).

All because he lost the contract to a site, as a new security company took over, so after he'd got rid of us, I contacted the new company and got myself and the 3 other lads a new job with them, And I'm taking that double crossing c*nt to employment tribunal.
Its not like he didn't have other work for us, he did, but couldn't be ar$ed moving people around and making up new rota's etc, he kept the people who were Lazy and had been banned from some sites and got rid of the reliable, hard working people, makes no sense at all.

Whatever you do, however you stretch yourself, between work and home, No boss is ever Happy, all they want is more money and stuff the people who work for them, after all they probably didn't get to where they are by not stomping on the "little guy". [thumbdown]

Yeah! And I'm working Saturday too, but don't mind as the job is easy peasy!

No, you work to live, not live to work

Any Chance you could get your boss to provide a Bar stool, one of those with a Cushioned Back?

And I'm being serious.

I had roughly the same problem, when I worked in a workshop at a computer repair shop, I had to lean over the bench and my back and legs were killing me by days end, so I asked my boss if I could bring in a bar stool to alleviate my aching back (pointing out that it was easier for him to agree rather than me take days off to attend a Hospital if my back became f*cked) And he agreed, mainly cos the workplace was not privy to the public eye, not that it mattered much as its better to let people see some guy sat on a stool, hard at work than some guy rubbing his back and complaining etc.

One of these, would not look out of place almost anywhere, height adjustable too.

Find another job, it is far easier than to put up with this BS.

Well, at least this time it wasn't my boss proper that made that comment (although he'd said similar things before). This time it was one of my thesis committee members.

... which brings me to the reason why I am stuck here. I want my degree.

This is why medical students and biomedical graduate students are commonly referred to as slaves. Because we are.

So what work do you plan on going into after you get the degree ?

(I know its something medical, but enlighten me).

Thus far I am leaning towards having a medical practice in oncology or perhaps dermatology, as well as doing research into biomolecular mechanisms of cancer and possible treatments.

Sounds interesting!

I guess your going to be earning sh*t loads of money, which is probably why its so difficult now your a student, Your bosses probably know that if they are not tough and don't push you, you won't get through it and see it to the end and get your degree.

Sounds like your going about it the right way though, so you should get there in the end.

How far into your degree are you and how long do you have left ?
