Poppies

They're talking about poppies (you know the ones from the Royal British Legion) on the radio and some bloke just phoned up and said he doesn't agree with using the poppy as a symbol because of its drug connotations. This is the first time I ever heard someone make this point.

I hope it's the last too... pretty silly comment tbh.

What he said was that our soldiers are dying in Afghanistan because of poppies being grown for drugs there and so they were the wrong symbol to use.

Poppies have been used as a symbol of remembrance since WW1 though http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/wacko1.gif...i didn't know we were in iraq to fight poppy pickers either.

Poppies are banned in Canada because they are too much of a distraction while driving on the road. [rolleyes]

We're not in Iraq anymore, we're in Afghanistan. As I understand it terrorists there use the profits from drugs to fund their activiites.

And what about all the helpful medicinal drugs that come from poppies. I think the same BS popped up here last year.

California Poppy is the state flower of california. You can't make drugs with it.

Now, if they were going to say Opium Poppy specifically, then he has a point.

/hits buzzer !!!!
The answer is WRONG http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/wink1.gif

Although you can´t make heroin out of it, it does have recreational uses.
I´ve drank Goldmohn (German name) tee and although it doesn´t hit you like opium, it does have it´s sedative values (same go´s for smoking it which produces a minor cannabis type of buzz).
Just wanted to point that straight.

btw Wiki also has something to say
California poppy leaves were used medicinally by Native Americans, and the pollen was used cosmetically. The seeds are used in cooking.
Extract from the California poppy acts as a mild sedative when smoked. The effect is far milder than that of opium, which contains a different class of alkaloids

i think we have to remove anything that's possible to blame for an accident. If it could be interpreted as a distraction then it's no good.
