Maybe I'm a little inebriated...but how in the heck could one manage to break 4" think glass with a ball bearing?

Force I would guess.
A ball bearing is quite strong and with enough force applied it could do serious damage.

(old rifles for example)

my guess is they used a slingshot. You can mess something up with a good slingshot and a steel ball.
