As I said, still photos can look fantastic, but I cant understand why video hasnt got better? They all seem to conform to the little bandwidth available for 3G video calls.
Because that's all people use the video function on their phones for apart from the odd youtube clip. Why should the manufacturers improve something that works well enough for the purpose it's intended for?

I can't help but chuckle at the people that just wander over to the edge to peek in, especially when it collapses further. It never struck them that with such a significant cave-in, the part of the road they're standing on might also cave in?

back on topic - it's not a 'pot hole' but rather a 'sink hole' - do a quick search and you'll find some that are hundreds of times that size. Some appeared under houses and people have died.
Damned scary, IMO!

Indeed, its now a sinkhole

anyway, its in the papers today, before the hole appeared there was a very very noticeable dip, it actually had a pic of a car driving over it.

It finally gave way when a bus drove near/on it [rofl]

Really big ones

" Sarisariñama Plateau Located in the Jaua-Sarisariñama National Park in Venezuela are some of the biggest sinkholes in the world. The sinkholes are 350 meters wide and 350 meters deep and are a geological mystery. The huge vertical walls have created an isolated ecosystem, with completely unique species of both flora and fauna. They’re so isolated in fact, that the sinkholes were only discovered in 1974. The scientific expedition was documented in David Nott’s book “into the lost world.”

How do they form, and where does the ground go?

They normally form due to underground water movement (rivers and/or groundwater) disolving or carrying away the rock and/or soil, forming underground caverns or caves. When the weight above is too much for the roof of the cavern to support, it collapses forming the hole. In some instances the cavern may be quite deep and the hole will also be quite deep as it tries to fill the space.
Sometimes, though, they're the result of man's actions as they can occure above mines that have caved in. In one example, a mine was beneath a large lake and the lake bed collapsed into the mine and drained it completely - I'll see if I can find the article for you.

OK, use "lake drained into mine" to 'Google' and it'll come up with a bunch of links.

Oh my word, and I thought Winnipeg's potholes were the worst. I couldn't imagine driving around and suddenly find myself in the ground cause I was looking at that seductive billboard instead of the road.

Hell, even if you were paying attention, it would be hard to avoid a hole if the roadway just collapses below you.

On a side note, when does a pothole become a sinkhole?
