Default Hypothetical question (car licence related)
Hi,

my dad wants to move to England within the near future. He sent my brother to junior college there and is thrilled about the whole country (guess he never met any chavs, lol). We have been to England quite often in the last couple of years to bring him to school or pick him up for holidays. Anyway, I got a stupid but interesting idea:

I know there is currently no agreement in place for both countries to collect monetary fines on the respective other country's soil. Lets say I registered my car at his address in England so I get a british licence plate. When I drive around in Germany and get cought by a stupid radar gun or traffic camera, or get a parking ticket... would I get away without paying or facing any consequences? Whats the law in Britain? Does the owner of a car registered to a certain address has to live there for a certain amount of time per year?

i belive at the moment the answer is yes you would get away with it but there are plans to introduce better communication accross europe with regard to driving offenses as it become quite a problem

I should imagine, though, that if you accumulated enough problems in Germany, the authorities there would initiate investigations that would trace the car owner back to Britain - and if they were particularly insistent on claiming the money, or just causing you trouble, they could request the British motoring authorities to investigate the details behind the registered owner. And naturally it would eventually transpire that such a person had a son back in Germany...

Well I have been caught by a speed cam recently, but before that I didnt have any offenses since 2005 or so. So its not like I'm a menace to society. Its just the occasional "6 lane straight Autobahn on a dry summer day but a 80kph speed limit" bullcrap I hate in this country.

Alot of Dutch people live in Germany / Belgium and drive cars with those numberplates. However, when police is on the road stopping you for a traffic violation, the fine is payed on the spot. If you can't than either license or car is being confiscated untill you have payed.

Being caught on camera is also bad, fines will come your way. It used to be too much effort for collecting a few fines, but these days they are working hard on it to improve communication and is already alot better than couple of years ago.

My advice, stay in the safe zone when speeding.
