Painting my car's wheels.
 

So I'm getting back into the swing of things. Getting things prepped to have the car running this year.

So we were painting my car's new wheels. They are 17x9.5" ZR1 rims all around Going with 275 series rubber. Originally silver, but going white.

As far as I know, I've never seen any white GTA's with white zr1s before so there are no pictures out there. This is a horrible photoshop I did a while ago. Its not my car, the paint isn't that good anymore. :(

Here is the 1st wheel. I fixed all of the curb rash on the wheels and took care of rock chips. That's my friend posing as we had previously finished up an engine swap in a 2000 Blazer because the owner ran it dry on oil. Thats about 3 hours into fixing the curb rash (BAD rash, as in chunks missing) and 4 coats of white wheel paint. Still have to wet sand it and then clear it.

These will be going onto my GTA.

Not my sort of styling - look like something for a FWD, but I expect that'll be for caliper clearance.
However, if you like them AND THEY FIT, then go for it! BTW, I assume it's a bit lower than that old photo'?

5 spokes are classic. The crosslace rims are great, and very light. But with only a 16" diameter future brake upgrade choices are dim. Looking to drop C6 Z06 brakes in front and keep the 12" in back. In order to do that a 17" rim is minimum. I had 18x9 C5 wagon wheels for a while, but didn't like the way they looked. And they were heavy.

I was going to go with a 17x9.5" in front and 17x11 in back, but much fender lip rolling or modification to the rear frame rails would be needed to tuck the rims under the quarter panels. That an 17x11" tires are expensive.

The car is still at stock ride height. Probably drop it about 2" in front with 2" drop spindles rather than lowering springs. the 2" drop spindles maintain proper suspension geometry which is important to me.

Dropped spindles also maintain suspension travel - prevents that sudden twitchiness when the suspension bottoms out.
Should be a beasy when it's back on the road - BTW, what's the running gear now - last I recall it was a T-56 and late small block?

Never went with the T56. Real life got me.

I'm either going to boost this LT1 to the moon, or drop a 5.3L LS based motor in from a newer GM truck. I'd kind of like to go the boosted route. a turbo charged LT1 should be good for almost 450rwhp if built right. And I love boost, so efficient! Though I'll likely only make about 400rwhp. If I do turbo this year it'll be a rear mount setup replacing the muffler with a turbo and piping the intake charge back up the car. Most of those setups are putting about 380rwhp down on a stock LT1

Boost is great,when it seems like it should just kid of slowly start to accelerate yet picks up like crazy and just keeps going...makes me smile every time...the little whine from the turbo. Just beautiful.

i think the wheels should look good. I know a couple porsche guys that did white on white and it turns out nice.

i too have a white car with a black leather interior (i dunno your interior) but i ant help from thinking black wheels would look the best on it. granted white might look good, i just cant picture it.

You need to lower that 4x4 pronto!

Black would be fine if they had a nice polished lip. However, I had to do several repairs on the wheels with metal filler which is a dull grey and wouldn't blend at all. So the wheels had to be painted. White wheels generally look good on these cars. And I don't feel like masking the entire wheel off just to paint the lip silver. Though it would look good.

White does look good on these cars. While I can't find an example on the net right now, I can show you a 30th anniversary camaro.

White wheels do look nice, however I hope you've got lots of free weekends....

Now, I know it's not a car, but I used to have a Kawasaki GPZ500s with White wheels. In the space of a week the back wheel was a nice black / grey where my chainlube had been flung onto the rim and was coated nicely with brake dust and other road muck. The front wheel took a bit longer to get bad, but was the same story (minus the chainlube).

Brakedust, wet tar (from newly surfaced roads) and other mess left behind by other vehicles & white wheels really don't go well together! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/cry1.gif

I went through lots of wheel cleaning products like it was water. Next bike had silver / grey rims (CBR400 Grey import) and thankfully I spent less time bent over cleaning wheels! http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ies/laugh1.gif

That's why ceramic brakes and white wheels are your friend! (That and Meguiars Wheel Brightener)

I already know how to care for a White car. White wheels will be easier to clean than the gold crosslace rims that were on the car. The crosslace rims were almost impossible to get a brush between the diamonds and get the brake dust out of there. These will be much easier.
