So I found myself wanting to purchase the SFIV Tournament Stick for Capcom's upcoming release, and found it was nearly impossible to find a place taking orders. About a month ago, I found Videogamecentral.com, and saw that they were "guaranteed" a certain number of sticks. Hesitant, I called them and had verbal confirmation from a manager that worked there.
Upon ordering, I noticed that I was instantly charged, which should have been an indicator of what was soon to follow. I called back, and asked them as to why I was instantly charged, as I made a comparison to Ebgames.com that only charges when the product has been shipped. The manager told me that this was done to guarantee that I will receive one. Fair enough. When Feb. 17 rolled around (the day they would be sending out the sticks), I called to confirm that they indeed received their shipment. The same guy answered the phone, and told me that I would be receiving an email that contained my order status. By order status, I figured it would have a tracking number to view my order in transit. Instead, the message described Mad Catz' inability to fulfill orders, blaming it on the "chinese new year," and various other excuses. I quickly contacted them, and requested a refund for the controller. They obliged, and sent an email with said cancellation. But where is the scam, you ask? Well, once I read the email, I came across this little nugget. If you have any order or preorder that you wish to cancel, there will be a 5% fee deducted from your refund if it is canceled after it has been processed and charged. First of all, they instantly charged my credit card for the order, which automatically placed me in the parameters of that disclaimer. While 5% doesn't seem like a lot of money, consider this: The controller costs $150, and 5% would equal $7.50. Now factor in that, from what I read on various forums, this company potentially took in thousands of orders. They placed false posts on their website from a member name "Gamer," which "confirmed" that they were still indeed receiving a large stock (even though there were apparently only about 3000 of these things made). Q: Hello. is this stick still available because i have been going crazy looking for one and all the stores have stopped taking pre orders. Wondering if I order one will I be able to receive it close enough to the release date of the gamefight stick? A: Yes although this is sold out everywhere VGC is still accepting preorders at this time. The preorders that we are currently taking in are still within our confirmed allocation of Street Fighter TE Sticks for both 360 PS3. When you see Back Ordered on this item page it will mean that we have reached our maximum allocations. Hence now is the time to get your preorder in. So if this company took in 1000 orders, that's $7,500 of pure profit for doing aboslutely nothing. I own 3 online companies, and whenever a refund is issued to a customer, the merchant account refunds the processing charge. Therefore, the 5% fee is completely bogus. I am going to contact my credit card company about the fee, if only based on principle. I'm also considering contacting the BBB about this fiasco. |

hmmm
take it on the chin for 7.50 or lose 150... I know what I'd go for. I wouldn't say its exactly a scam, more like a cheeky if people decide to withdraw their "pre order" but im sure most people are more than happy to wait. but then if every person decided to cancel their pre order then the company would be heavily out of pocket with a massive delivery of controllers and no pre order customers to ship them out to. |

What happens if I want to cancel my Pre-Order before it is released?
If you cancel your order after it has been processed and charged there will be a 5% fee deducted from the refund. If you wish to cancel an order and not be charged a fee, it must be done before the order is processed and charged. Always glance over the sites policies when you are considering a pre-order or may be considering a return on the item if it isnt something you like. I found VGC's pre-order policy in under 10 seconds on their site. It's not hidden. |

Always glance over the sites policies when you are considering a pre-order or may be considering a return on the item if it isnt something you like. 1. There are a limited number of these control sticks being made, period. 2. VGC stated that I was guaranteed my stick. 3. VGC keeps orders open until Feb. 17, taking pre-orders until the very last minute (when many stores were literally getting one or two, not a thousand). 4. VGC fails to deliver on their promise, says Mad Catz "MAY" make more items, I'm left with no other option but to cancel, thus resulting in %5 fee. You see, with any other pre-order, the worst thing that happens is that you wait until they receive another shipment. If a product is in limited run, you are fraudulently taking orders for an item that does not exist in the quantity they specified. Therefore, nearly everyone who pre-ordered is forced to cancel, thus resulting in them making money off of a scam. Besides, the "cancel before the order is charged and processed" is complete bullshit, because they AUTOMATICALLY charge you the second you order. That's the equivalent to a store saying they will do a refund as long as you do it before they ring it up at the cash register. This is not a very difficult concept to follow. |
