I've had professors make us write scientific journal articles who were less strict about source citing. Taking it the the dean is ridiculous IMO.

so let me get my head round this.

you're at college your pissed at your teacher,for doing what he did.

yet in the real world if it wasn't cited but used etc,you and the company you work for would be sued into the ground for unauthorized use/ non acknowledgment of original copyrighted/intellectual material by its respective owners.

For the others maybe. In my case I used the Java logo from Sun Micro Systems. I did not claim it to be my own. In fact, the page was about the Java language and provided links to their site to get people started with Java. I think use of that logo in this non-profit, educational page constitutes fair-use. Sun would certainly not be pissed, but I didn't cite it and now I get in hot water.

I get your point, but I don't think it's the same. This isn't a page made for money. It's a page made cause we had too. http://discussworldissues.com/forums...es/tongue1.gif And even if it had been a larger, non academic site, the use of a logo in the context I did would be fair-use (I think, I don't really know much about the law).

Well... you certainly need to learn about giving proper credit to material which isn't yours.. but if it's the first assignment... I think taking it to the dean is a little extreme... he should have just explained & let you correct it or worry about it next time.

Here's something you need clarifying...

It doesn't matter whether you claimed it to be yours or not!

It is assumed to be yours, unless otherwise stated

Also... whether it's made to make money or not, doesn't make a difference.

And that's how copyright / plagiarism sees it.

If you even use a logo or any content which is copied and pasted (that includes a logo), the source/author MUST be credited, in all cases.


It can be a very major thing... but like I said... as it was your first project, imo the tutor should have had a word with you instead of putting it up to the dean [surrender]

Yeah, I defiantly should have said where I got it from, that was my bad. The point of this class is to learn about the web and its workings. It's stupid he turned this first project into what it is now when for many it was their first crack at anything. Letting us know, then showing us how would have been much better.

Perhaps this tutor thinks you will learn better if you see what happens if you don't cite sources?

I just worry it scared some of the less experienced (it's a 3rd year course, but can be taken by anyone in any year of CS) away from what is a very interesting, and useful, topic.

sometimes the "fear" of punishment is enough to make people think twice and I bet they will remember that for the rest of their careers, cos if they don't they will land their companies in a lot of copyright infringement suits.

I bet this was done intentionally,and its all a setup and part of the course where they wait for you to fook up on day one.


they did this sort of thing during my "basic training" they wait for you to fook up on day one then get you in front of the boss then he shites all over you, and you never make that same mistake again.

I'm just going in to my 3rd year at university (college for you state-side)... I knew about plagiarism rules & proper citing when I was about 12 years old lol... although that was probably because my mother's a lecturer at the local university, drilled it in to me & I remember her searching google for copy-and-paste-ers haha.

perhaps that's another way of seeing if students are serious enough and can cut it.

Defiantly should have known better for sure! (I'm 4th year http://discussworldissues.com/forums...es/tongue1.gif) This was the first assignment and it was easy, so I didn't give it any time really. Obviously I overlooked citing my Java logo (which, funnily enough, was added last minute for some flare). Doesn't justify my error, I know, but had I spent the time on it that I would on, say for example, my C++ assignments I would have been more particular.

Ah well, I guess it's all been done now. You guys are right though. I won't forget this!
