I'm doing an intro to web programming course at uni. Our first assignment was to install apache on the undergrad server and make a little web page showing off what we already know about XHTML and CSS. This is a course to teach those, so it was kind of a fun assignment. I have done plenty of this stuff, so it was a breeze.
Yesterday he posted the marks and 8 out of 22 have an "INC" listed. This was odd, so we asked him. He told us we did not meet the standard for academic honesty and our work was forwarded to the Academic Integrity Officer in our department. ![]() We eventually figured out that we all used pictures of some type on our sites and did not, if at all, cite the source correctly. [rolleyes] I have a Java logo I took from wiki and I just said I took it from wiki. Others didn't cite, others did similar to what I did. Needless to say we were furious. We went back to him and he told us not to worry and he seriously doubts anything will come of it. Just a slap on the wrist and info on how to cite properly on future assignments. I asked him why the hell even bother to drag us through this if he knows nothing will come of it and he didn't have an answer for me. Anyone else agree that he took this way to far? It was the first assignment of the year. For 90% of the class this was their first web page ever! Now we all have to stress over this until the AI officer comes up with a decision (he happens to be the dean as well). The dean/AIO is a cool guy and he probably thinks this is as silly as we do, but either way we are all pissed. [cursing] |
