Default Bill Gates leaves Microsoft
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/rtrs/200806...s-ca02f96.html

SEATTLE (Reuters) - Sensing the start of a personal computer revolution, Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard University in 1975 to start Microsoft Corp and pursue a vision of a computer on every desk and in every home.

Three decades later, Gates is set to step down on Friday from what is now the world's largest software company to work full-time at the charitable organization -- the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation -- built by his vast fortune. Bill Gates is to retire on friday - love him or hate him , everyone knows his legacy

There's no sense of achievement in that. It's like driving up a mountain and thinking your earned the view. Lazy sod!

Gates is the epitome of an example of how College can sometimes be vastly overrated when it comes to success in this country.

what's interesting is how he's managed to salvage his reputation. It wasnt too long ago that a lot of people thought he was the devil incarnate. To his credit, he's donated billions to eradicating disease. I've always admired the guy. His philanthropy just makes me even more.

You can't really blame him for his success. Windows has its faults, it always has, many of them blown way out of proportion. Windows is the most successful operating system so far. OS X is great, I love it, but its just as vulnerable as Windows, and so is Linux for the most part. Why write a virus for 10% of the population when you can write a virus that could infect 90% of the population.

I'm not a vista fan, i'm quite happy with XP, I may eventually move to Vista but currently don't have plans, my next machine will be a linux box, with windows as a 2nd boot, or maybe even as a VM.

I was watching a BBC documentary about him the other night. Apparently Microsoft make a billion dollars a day?

It's not that he's just giving it away either - it's being done thoughtfully, targetting the kinds of diseases that are real problems in poorer countries, but can be effectively tackled - like childhood measles - not just the 'glamour' diseases like AIDS. I really admire that.

I agree. It's all well and good to donate to AIDS research, but it's just that; research. If the money can be used to cure people with "lesser" ailments right away, I feel that is money better spent. Not to belittle the importance of AIDS research, but immediate action will save more lives right now.
