In reality, a holodeck would be inefficient - a waste of energy, it would be much better to input signals directly into the brain Matrix style, less energy required and no limitations, and that would be likely to become a reality a lot sooner than a holodeck...

But would anyone here really feel comfortable hooking thier brain up to a computer?

They never seemed to when they used them on star trek.

Another interesting thing was that the holodecks also employer part replicator technology so not everything in the virtual world was actually virtual!
Replicators don't create space..

Agreed, Matrix>Holodeck.

Holodecks would be the end of society (star trek)

Just like every Star Wars fan wishes they could use the Force, I think every Star Trek fan wishes they had a Holodeck. Its like the ultimate video game.

But, if the technology existed, I think it would be the end of life as we know it. People wouldn't want to accept the real world, they would just want to live in the perfect little world that they have created for themselves. I guess we already see similar problems with World of Warcraft, but the holodeck would really be a problem since you could just program girls (enough said).

I remember there were actually a few episodes that touched on problems with the Holodeck. There was the Deep Space Nine episode where Quark tries to scan a female crew member in order to make a holodeck program of questionable content, and people thought voyeur cams were bad!

Anyways, just my 2 cents. I still want a holodeck though.

The thing with a holodeck, wouldn't you just walk into the walls? I mean OUCH! That would hurt.

Remember too kids that holodecks can be very dangerous! In one Star Trek epiosode that fool La Forge (hey, that rhymed!) asked the computer to create a challenge worthy of Data (as Sherlock Holmes), safe to say Professor Moriarty turned out to be very dangerous!

So if you were to say: I want to be ****ed hard by a real dangerous situation, Duke Nukem style! It could be the worst day of your life.

lmao I remember that too... which makes me sad on many levels

The holodeck was always an awesome thing to dream about having, cept when they malfunctioned and the safety systems didnt work.... that whole possibility of real death is kinda shitty

Sounds and smells are simulated by speakers and fragranced fluid atomizers, respectively. The feel of a large environment is simulated by suspending the participants on force fields which move with their feet, keeping them in one place (a virtual treadmill). Perspective is retained through use of sound damping fields and graviton lenses, which make objects, people, and sounds appear to be more distant. The effect is an ultra-realistic simulation of an environment, with which the user can interact. A working holodeck might put the porn industry out of business. Why watch Jenna Jameson in action, when you can be with Jenna Jameson in action?

And for anyone who debates that people wouldn't sleep with a collection of force fields and holographic imagery, let me point out, people pay money for blow-up dolls. At least with a hologram you don't need a puncture repair kit.

Though I think holodecks might be some way off yet, I think this is much more likely in the near future

I found one comparison between Captain Picard and Captain Janeway amusing.

"On Picards ship, The holodeck characters try to kill him, on Janeway's ship, the holodeck characters try to have sex with her."
