A Scanner Darkly
 

Just watched it and it's a great film, very underrated. The cast is perfect, I'd actually be interested to see it without the cartoon effect, though that does add to the surreal feel.

Am I right in saying that 'a scanner darkly' refers to the fact that scans, surveillance, statistics etc. do not see people clearly, as they do not detect what is going on in their minds, or why they do the things they do? I really wanna see the bit where he explains it again, but I rented so..

Could have guessed that somebody with fear and loathing for their av & sig would like it. I thought it was really good, even just for the antics of the characters, I really found a level of connection with them. Some people I've spoken to said that it really needed the ending, the "something happening" as they might phrase it. But to me that was more of a bonus than a necessity, as the journey was so enjoyable.

If you want to know more about the scanners, why not read the book? That's sure to offer more detail.

I mean right near the end... without giving too much away.

Excellent movie indeed. I'd love to see more movies try this animation approach.
Perfect cast as you said, and a wicked plot.

This is the kind of movie that A LOT of people don't like, but there's a select few who understand it's quality.

I'm thinking now that I might read the book. I thought it immediately after seeing the movie, but let the desire slip by. I'm a big fan of Blade Runner and that moved me to read "Do Androids...". Which was a good read, but honestly could have been a bit longer (a rare suggestion by me regarding books).

I liked it as well and own it on HD DVD. Philip K **** is one of my favourite authors, I don't have this one as a book though.

A Scanner Darkly is one of the author's finest novels. required reading for anyone who liked the movie, which I haven't gotten around to viewing yet.

As a huge fan of PKD I found the film tremendously underwhelming, It's analogous of "Blade Runner" and "Do androids dream", but without a decent film appearing. In that, the book is so much stronger, and the film actually comparatively weak and lacking in content and point. The best of the book is kind of in there, but the meaning removed. In the same way as Blade Runner, but the content isn't replaced with acting, direction, story or anything really.
I have studied Gnostic theory purely to understand the Valis trilogy better, and I found Scanner Darkly pretty poor.

if anyone enjoyed scanner darkly, then watch Richard Linklater's similar previous film , called WAKING LIFE.

Yeah, both Waking Life and A Scanner Darkly are really amazing. Waking Life is more 'surreal' and deals with lucid dreaming.

ASD is one of my favorite movies of all time though.

Yip, cracking film is Scanner Darkly. Had a good message in the film too.

Didn't like it and had to turn it off at the point where they break down on the motorway with the accelerator getting stuck, the story intrigued me so i did go to the wikipedia page to read up on what happens afterwards, after reading it, i was glad i never continued. The movie just seemed like a waste of time and just a story about some undercover government guy slowly succumbing to drugs...[thumbdown]

It's a great film, something to get bonged to.
