It depends upon the state. Some are more or less strict thn others, but all of them probably afford more leeway with modifications than parts of europe. Emissions testing is common in the larger population areas, as are vehicle inspections in some states, but it is not a countrywide thing.

You can pretty much talk to state inspection guy and be all freindly and they will most of the time just give you a sticker....its the US lol....we dont care about emissions, ive helped my freinds take off countless catalytic converters for better sound.

By just having a look at those 'vehicles' the local vehicle inspector would get a seizure on the spot.

I'm grateful I returned from USA in one piece after driving 4200 miles on her roads. [surrender]

I believe the going rate is $50 around here at an independent inspection station and they'll just give you the sticker without even taking a look at your vehicle. It really is a joke. [rofl]

I've heard about that going on in the US too, even at this side of the pond. At first I thought it was a joke, but apparently it isn't.

When my car is up for inspection in 2 years I'll just go to a DMV place and get it done for free. Of course, I don't do stupid things to my car, so I had better pass. [rofl]

I know here, even in Tennessee we have to go to emissions. Though it is really simple to get buy. Just swap your exhaust for a day if you don't have a cat installed, and if your engine light is on, just reset the light.

Though in the county that I live in, the number of registered cars did drop almost 33% due to cars not passing. Though all you have to do is go to another county, though you need to have a friend or family in that county to do it. So emissions does work.

Though I have heard that in Virginia, any car where the bumper is over 2ft off the ground you can get a ticket.
Though all you have to do is get your car inspected. I think here in Tennessee, you have to get a state inspector to check it out, at least in this county. This county is really tough on emissions because Chattanooga used to be one of the worst in the country and there are still some major big problems, even with industry not being here from some 30+ years, and the change already being a drastic one for the better.

I once failed an inspection on my old car because the seatbelt didn't retract fast enough when you released it. The suspension, brakes, wheels, structure, lights and safety systems need to be in good or perfect condition to pass. Aftermarket wings, window-tint and even windshield stickers are illegal.

lol
