There should be a standard, end of story. Artworks... lol. You either make all movies in 16:9 or give us tv sets that have true widescreen size. I'd rather have black bars on either side than above and below the picture. I absolutely hate this fowl compromise that is called 16:9. Instead of keeping it 4:3 or make it true widescreen, we now have black bars everytime, whether we watch regular tv or a movie. Crap.
Most TV channels DO broadcast in 16:9.....at least they do in this country.

It would be nice if all directors stuck to 16:9 when they made movies, but they don't. Laugh all you want. I won't bother explaining any more. Movie lovers want OAR.

I would've said "movie enthusiasts," but I agree! [xmascandle]

Pan scanning a 2,35:1 movie to fit the screen is bad. Watch the movie, not the "black bars".
Easier to do when you have a 100"+ projection screen[thumbup]

It pisses me off when I'm watching on a small screen and the image is even smaller because of letterboxing, but when the screen is big enough, I don't even notice it. I'll use zoom sometimes when I'm watching on my 4:3 32" hdtv (like watching 24 or prison break), but right now while I'm watching lost, I'm watching in letterbox mode (all the pretty scenery )

I want my receiver back so I can finish catching up on lost on the big screen!

Yep, got mine... almost 3 years ago now. Was the same price as the much smaller 30" widescreen, so I figured why not... The letterbox mode is the same size as the 30" widescreen, but I get a bigger fullscreen image

In my case, I couldn't fit anything wider than 32" 4:3 or 30" widescreen, but the height was not an issue.

I did the exact same thing.

And to the guy suggesting stretching a 4:3 is better than watching something with thin bars at the top and bottom... you should be punched.
