why dont the cars dvd take up the whole screen

i have a 16/9 screen but im watching the cars wide screen dvd and its letterboxed or what ever ya call it i tryied all setings shouldnt it be a 16/9 movie?

bribiaLaubysdggf 05-03-2007 07:23 AM

It was probably made in 2.35:1 ratio which is wider than 16:9, hence the black bars at the top and bottom of the picture.

8jIDXQ80 05-03-2007 07:26 AM

o that sucks. i hate when movies dont take up the screen. and zoom always looks funny to me

alecaf 05-03-2007 07:27 AM

Yep, we needeth 2.35/1 computer screens, don't we? [yes] http://discussworldissues.com/forums...s/excited1.gif

8jIDXQ80 05-03-2007 07:31 AM

i havent been to a movie theature in years i guess thats the shape of the screens

neguoogleX 05-03-2007 07:43 AM

different movies are filmed in different aspect ratios. Unless the motion picture industry agrees on a standard there will always be movies with black bars.

scewLacysmazy 05-03-2007 05:01 PM

you bought the wrong one...

there are both widescreen and fullscreen versions available.

widescreen is filmed in 2,35:1 the other one in 4:3

PebydataFeents 05-03-2007 05:36 PM

just looking at my dvd collection, the most common is 2.35:1, but also I have 1.78:1, 2.40:1 & 1.77:1
The widescreen format that most tv's/displays use is 16:9, which is the 1.78:1 ratio, so as previously stated most dvd's will have the back bars...

Yeah but he wants it in 16:9

scewLacysmazy 05-03-2007 08:11 PM

yeah i know

but the 4:3 will be stretched to full size on a 16:9 tv depending on the picture setting with no black bars at all

the widescreen will always display black bars as usually even with zoom settings only part of the black bars will be zoomed out of view

Yeah and he will end up with a distorted image of a Pan N Scan which I don't really think is what he is looking for. http://discussworldissues.com/forums.../confused1.gif

scewLacysmazy 05-03-2007 10:02 PM

i dont notice it anymore...

its the question what he dislikes more. black bars or slighty stretched image.

I'd say it was a choice between black bars and a slightly stretched image which is missing about 50% of it's information/detail.

scewLacysmazy 05-03-2007 10:39 PM

well... say it how you like it.

and please note, that he already is stretching the image because he wants to disable the black bars but simply with the widescreen version he still has those. so most likey the stretching does not bother him

Farson 05-03-2007 11:47 PM

Pan scanning a 2,35:1 movie to fit the screen is bad. Watch the movie, not the "black bars".

hmmm...

thats when you get when reading posts in the office+

so what to do now??? in my opinion fullscreen is still the way to go.

Farson 05-04-2007 04:05 AM

If you had said you think movie studios should only produce new movies in 16:9 then I would understand, but saying they should cut away half the picture to "fill the screen", then I just don't get why you would want that. Original Aspect Ratio (OAR) is important. Watch the movie not around it.

Movies are artworks. The problem is that movie lovers want to watch the movie in OAR, while some people are angry over something as silly as "the movie doesn't fill my TV screen". If they want to "fill the screen" they should use the zoom function and not force studios to rape the releases like they have been doing in the past.

scewLacysmazy 05-04-2007 04:12 AM

i always use the zoom function.

of course as i said i dont notice the difference so much anymore.

There should be a standard, end of story. Artworks... lol. You either make all movies in 16:9 or give us tv sets that have true widescreen size. I'd rather have black bars on either side than above and below the picture. I absolutely hate this fowl compromise that is called 16:9. Instead of keeping it 4:3 or make it true widescreen, we now have black bars everytime, whether we watch regular tv or a movie. Crap.
