Default Using Office 2010 Home & Student for business?
I am looking to purchase approximately 5 licenses of the new version of Office 2010 for a small business. The main software used is Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Home and Student version comes with the above and covers 3 computers in a single "home". Cost approx £80 per copy so i would need 2 of these.

The other option is Home and Business which is 1 license per computer and would cost approx £150 per copy would need 5 copies.

So as you can see there is a *massive* cost difference. Is there anything legally wrong with using "Home & Student" edition for a Small Business if it covers our needs?

Yes, it's illegal lol. That's what's legally wrong with it. The license is very clear that home and student is NOT for commercial use.

However....if you're a small business I very much doubt anyone will ever find out. We have office pro on all our computers but if I had my way...

Thing is we are trying to be legal otherwise i wouldn't be purchasing the software. I am asking because often the title will mean its "tailored" towards a particular individual but the license may not reflect this.

In that case you need the SBE edition.

No, like DM said, you can't. In the License it states that it is not for commercial, non-profit, or revenue-generating business activities.

Ok cheers guys! SBE isn't available in 2010. So 6 copies of "home and business" it is! Volume licensing through microsoft is approx £350 per copy so it isnt cheap... Better to just buy that many copies of the software.

Have you considered Open Office?

I find my self buying MS Office, but OO is pretty nice too. If it saves some good money, it may be worth it for a business. Are there specific MS things that are required?

edit - Also, I find Google Docs to be fine for most simple tasks...

The biggest problem with that in a commercial environment is document incompatibility.

If the whole business uses it though, there should be little issue. I have found OO to be quite good at opening .doc and even .docx. I'm sure some fancier features get left out and if thats what is needed, then OO is definitely not suitable.

Sorry, I mean document incompatibility between suppliers and providers, not internal to the company.

Ah, I see. That could cause some issues for sure.

MAPS is a very tricky one....if your businesses' primary function is not IT then you are illegible for a MAPS license.
