I don't think less children will help our economy in any way. More people is really not a problem in our situation and that is one reason why immigration should be less restricted.

Over all the amount of child can increase but having a few people who spend their money on other things can help. The total pop is still going up.

The total pop is still going up. Only because death rates dropped. Birth rates are actually pretty low worldwide at 2.4.

In expectation I believe that turning a gay person straight (retroactively, at least) would make them happier.
Because they wouldn't have to listen to ignorant people tell them they'd be happier as a straight person?

If an asteroid were projected to wipe out most of Earth, and you are president and have to pick who gets a ticket to the national bomb shelter, you'd have to exclude and condemn homosexuals, the elderly the sick and the obese.
More likely, given free reign to pick... all the guys would just happen to be homosexuals, and all the women are hot.

So, did anyone else notice that women are into really short shorts this summer? I mean women wear shorts every summer, but this year I've seen a lot of late '70s style cut off type shorts that barely have enough material to cover the crotch. I approve this message.

Not to mention the designers of Civ5. They'd deserve their punishment too!

What if on the way to finding cure, they find a gay pill first - ie you take it and you become gay??? Will they take over the world instead, and only designer babies? Seems to have potential to resolve overpopulation problems, global warming and next great extinction of wildlife. Once you get the human population numbers down to 100000 you can exploit the world as much as you want without repercussions, and if you can get to that number without WWIII, all the better. Clearly it's the only solution without causing much pain and suffering

Because lots of straight people are mean to gay people, and lots of gay people observably have a more difficult adolescence.
So the solution for straight people being homophobic would be to cure the gay people of their gayness?

It's also not clear that homophobia is the only reason that gay people would be less happy. Anecdotal evidence suggests that the process of discovering that you're gay is inherently somewhat confusing and stressful for many people. Finally, it's obviously going to be slightly easier for straight people to find partners because of network effects.

I mean, seriously guys think about this. We have roughly three possibilities:

In expectation a child will live a happier life if he is born gay. (This seems unlikely.)
In expectation a child will live precisely as happy a life if he is born gay as if he is born straight. (This seems very unlikely. It would be very strange if the two were exactly equal.)
In expectation a child will live a happier life if he is born straight. (This seems to match our observations to date.)

Now, it's theoretically possible that there is some social good to diversity of sexual orientation, but I don't see any evidence of one and no one else has put forward this theory. Thus we should conclude that if we were given a button that would turn all children born henceforth straight, we ought to press the button.

Now do the same thing but with the child being born Black or white.
You of course come to the same answer. What of it?

Don't many people argue that even today being born black puts a child at an inherent disadvantage in life? Isn't the logical conclusion that, were the same child born white instead, he would not have that disadvantage?

To equate advantage/disadvantage (or easy/difficult life) to happy/unhappy is where you're completely at odds with reality.

Imagine that people weren't semi-randomly assigned to be gay or straight (or black or white). Rather, all babies are born with a little switch on their head that can be turned left or right. Left = gay, right = straight. The baby doesn't actually turn into a living child until you flip the switch. What rule would you use to decide which direction to flip the switch. Always left? Always right? Flip a coin?

Many gay people report that these difficulties make them unhappy. Introspection suggests that I would also be unhappy if I were treated in the way that many straight people treat gay people. I'm on solid epistemological ground here.

Many straight people report that gay people are on the verge of ruining their marriages.

You still don't seem to understand that specific instances of unhappiness do not necessarily equate to a less happy life. Often they are a requirement for a truly happy life.

You're just hanging your myopic hat on one factor so that you can pretend you know something that's unknowable.
