I did some research on the dumb Kickstarter picture:
Brian Banks, which is now FUNDED, was a documentary on his life: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...story?ref=live The perks are the regular movie perks (a tshirt with the movie, the film, etc etc). Anita Sarkeesian is doing a documentary on Tropes vs. Women in video games: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...games?ref=live The perks involve digital downloads of the video series. --- I'd rather back Sarkeesian's project. It sounds waaaay more interesting. |

I did some research on the dumb Kickstarter picture: People just wanted to make a statement. I actually think that Banks issue is the more relevant one (although I also would probably rather watch Sarkessian's, but it is worth ~10k not >100k.). My point is that people hear about something, and then say 'I want to make a statement there too...'. Economists should study this! JM |

There was no reason to way overfund Sarkeesian's project. |

The video game thing is ****ing stupid. I don't remember seeing a single woman in Call of Duty MW3, let alone some scantily-clad one to be saved. |

Anyway, how many games really portray women like that?
Best to look at the best-selling games because they have the greatest exposure. 360 games: Kinect Adventures: I don't know; but I doubt it Call of Duty Black Ops: Nope Halo 3: Yes Call of Duty: MW2: nope Gears of War: I guess Anya's military uniform is tight in the original but she's completely covered and you rarely see her anyway; In Gears 3, she wears metal armor and is decidedly unsexual PC: Sims: Nope Lemmings: Nope Sims 2: Nope Starcraft: Original nope but Starcraft 2 yes. Half-Life: Nope |

Oh, and Re:OP, what surprises me most is the way the kids are being nasty little turds to an adult authority figure. Judging by my brief subbing experience, most middle-schoolers will gladly tear each other apart like starving dingos--without mercy, decency or remorse--but generally still want to be the teacher's friend. In high school it was usually the other way around. Which was why I loved my middle-schoolers. Every other day or so I had to report a child sobbing his eyes out in the bathroom/hallway during class, but they were nice to me.

I've yet to toss anyone.

Sadly, there is also a racial component to the sensationalizing of this incident because the old lady was white and the children slinging abuse at her were black children. Most of the media has rightly avoided the racial angle but several right wing radio shows and websites have been playing it up for all it is worth. |
