$100,000 raised for bus monitor

It looks like there are still kind hearted people left in the world.

zuhraliyana 06-21-2012 05:35 PM

Well, with the 100k she can hire someone else who does the work of punching the kids for her http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...es/biggrin.gif

Nice idea, btw. http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

What a wonderful story!! Warms my heart!

Over a quarter of a million now http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...milies/eek.gif

BRB video-taping my grandmother getting bullied and putting it on youtube.

Is tapping anything like capping? http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif
More like wire-tapping.

DesautocaD 06-21-2012 10:31 PM

I was going to donate then when I saw the total where it was and figured the woman really didn't need anymore. I'll donate the money to a cause a bit more needy at this point.

Goodwin 06-21-2012 10:44 PM

Yeah... I don't understand why anyone donated after she reached her target. Messed up priorities I guess. At this point donating to animal shelters would do more good.

pumpineemob 06-21-2012 10:48 PM

I expect to see a few copycat type videos that will attempt to cash in also. I feel sorry for everyone's grandma at this point. Let's add some violence to ours to make it more deserving. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

I saw this about another kick starter:

Crappy picture. We don't know what the Kickstarters are for, or what the perks are for either.

Cgnebksb 06-21-2012 10:57 PM

I did some research on the dumb Kickstarter picture:

Brian Banks, which is now FUNDED, was a documentary on his life:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...story?ref=live

The perks are the regular movie perks (a tshirt with the movie, the film, etc etc).

Anita Sarkeesian is doing a documentary on Tropes vs. Women in video games:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...games?ref=live

The perks involve digital downloads of the video series.

---

I'd rather back Sarkeesian's project. It sounds waaaay more interesting.

There was no reason to way overfund Sarkeesian's project.

People just wanted to make a statement.

I actually think that Banks issue is the more relevant one (although I also would probably rather watch Sarkessian's, but it is worth ~10k not >100k.).

My point is that people hear about something, and then say 'I want to make a statement there too...'.

Economists should study this!

Do you understand how Kickstarter works? If you don't fund the project, you don't get the perks (ie, you don't get high-res version of the series). Most people fund Kickstarter projects for the perks themselves, not because they think its an important project.

The video game thing is ****ing stupid. I don't remember seeing a single woman in Call of Duty MW3, let alone some scantily-clad one to be saved.

Are women oversexualized in games with exaggerated features? Maybe. But so are men. Games as diverse as Gears of War to Starcraft portray super-muscular men.
How is that the same as portraying women as having massive tits and wearing almost nothing? Men look more heroic if they are muscular. I don't think it has anything to do with sex. Don't be so dumb...

muBXvWIC 06-22-2012 12:49 AM

You are very obtuse...

geniusxs81 06-22-2012 12:58 AM

Anyway, how many games really portray women like that?

Best to look at the best-selling games because they have the greatest exposure.

360 games:
Kinect Adventures: I don't know; but I doubt it
Call of Duty Black Ops: Nope
Halo 3: Yes
Call of Duty: MW2: nope
Gears of War: I guess Anya's military uniform is tight in the original but she's completely covered and you rarely see her anyway; In Gears 3, she wears metal armor and is decidedly unsexual

PC:
Sims: Nope
Lemmings: Nope
Sims 2: Nope
Starcraft: Original nope but Starcraft 2 yes.
Half-Life: Nope

The woman's fundraiser is now over $500,000. She can probably retire now.

In related news, the police pointed out one of the 13 year olds who tormented her has received over 1,000 death threats. Possibly a fund should be set up for him...?

Oh, and Re:OP, what surprises me most is the way the kids are being nasty little turds to an adult authority figure. Judging by my brief subbing experience, most middle-schoolers will gladly tear each other apart like starving dingos--without mercy, decency or remorse--but generally still want to be the teacher's friend. In high school it was usually the other way around. Which was why I loved my middle-schoolers. Every other day or so I had to report a child sobbing his eyes out in the bathroom/hallway during class, but they were nice to me.

I've yet to toss anyone.

what´s a bus monitor
They help the bus driver keep unruly kids in line so that the school bus driver can concentrate on driving the bus without crashing. This poor old grandmother was doing it for virtually no money simply so she could help a local school out and some kids with horrible parents who didn't discipline their children subjected the poor woman to all manner of abuse. Sadly, there is also a racial component to the sensationalizing of this incident because the old lady was white and the children slinging abuse at her were black children. Most of the media has rightly avoided the racial angle but several right wing radio shows and websites have been playing it up for all it is worth.

Surely only dumb hairy Persians do things like that!
