Congratulations to Britain after a century of Olympic under-performance

They aren't top of the medals...

Muramoursuard 08-09-2012 04:49 PM

Which in the Olympics is medal worthy. Participation medals for everyone!

What happens when you exclude joke "sports"?

GB can't win any real sports like Canada has.

Gold in women's trampoline...don't you ****ing forget it. http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

But as the host, they have the most participants. 541/530 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Summer_Olympics

So more participants and only 65% of our gold medals. Pretty poor. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

I don't think just entering people is generally enough to win golds. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

I'm being generous, but you're right, just don't tell them

Haven't they won something like 4 or 5 times as many medals as they usually do? Am I the only one who thinks that's a little strange? Is the home court advantage usually that great?
We won 19 Gold medals at the Beijing Olympics, and last time I checked China was no longer in the Empire.

Hofonom 08-10-2012 01:02 AM

Speaking of Hong Kong, why the **** do they still get their own Olympic team?

Lapsinuibense 08-10-2012 01:26 AM

Puerto Rico at least has its own anthem.

WordofViagra 08-10-2012 01:35 AM

I seem to recall reading somewhere that it's actually expected to pass, or is reasonably likely to. Can't find the article at the moment, though.

As host country, they get an automatic entry into every event even if they suck at it.

tramadoldiscountes 08-10-2012 02:33 AM

Guam has a small team.

It's not a big change, really.

Switiespils 08-10-2012 08:48 AM

Well, FFS, they have Bolt. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

Congrats, Brits. Well-done. http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

Australia just moved into the top ten - and we're having a bad year

outsitWrord 08-10-2012 10:53 AM

restart the empire

Brareevor 08-10-2012 01:44 PM

Puerto Rico would probably be a swing state, so it's hard to see any party immediately benefiting. Just like Hawaii. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...ilies/wink.gif

I think he classes swimming as a "lying down" sport.

If they suck, how are they winning medals (the gold, silver, bronze variety as opposed to lead, tin, zinc) in those events?

I liked what the British ambassador to the US said on The Daily Show a couple weeks back:

"Well, we Brits tend to excel at the sitting down sports."
(paraphrased)
It's easier to keep from jostling your tea that way.
