Because most Americans aren't violent criminals who need to be put away for the good of society.

We have a lot more criminals than those countries. That's the real problem; why do we have so many more criminals, not why do we have so many prisoners?

"Congrats on finishing your 10-year prison sentence. Now remember: this time, don't do heroin."
"Oh ****, that reminds me, I need to do some heroin!"

Wikipedia says that it refers to a genus of deciduous trees, so apparently the US has a lot of naughty trees (or maybe they cut down a lot of trees after convicting them on trumped up charges)

"...trunked up charges" would have been funnier.

It's both.

You have so many criminals due to the stupid war on drugs, and you have so many prisoners because your system doesn't rehabilitate very well.
Yeah. I don't think non-violent drug offenders should be sent to prison. But I do think they should be sentenced to some kind of probation program, and rehabilitated.

I think many of the prisoners who are imprisoned because of some types of misdemeanors could have been rehabilitated, rather than tossed into prison. But hey, corporations who own and operate the prisons need to make a profit.

I think non-violent socialist do-gooders should be sentenced to some sort of probation program and rehabilitated.

I don't think non-violent sodomites should be sent to prison, but they should be put on probation and rehabilitated.

Aren't convicts routinely released early due to overcrowding in the US?

The end result is people are being released early prior to their sentence being served due to insufficient resources.

That has nothing to do with how we run our prisons and everything to do with our stupid drug laws.

Also, damn you for making me answer seriously.
Yay,
a country in which even schoolgirls can get suspended because they bring a single Aspirine pill with them to school (because they have headaches) is truely "interesting". (of course I know that the main blame should be put onto the school here ... but it is sad, that the police had to play its part in this farce, with arresting the girl and then taking her with them in handcuffs, instead of taking the principal of the school, shaking him violently and crying "DAMN YOU, THIS IS JUST A SIMPLE HEADACHE PILL" )

Yes. Everyone else here thinks it's awesome. The idea that taking people out of the labor force through incarceration could increase corporate profits is startling.

Am I the only one who thinks that putting people in prison for the sake of corporations' profits to be flawed?
Yes, you are the only one

No, here it's never due to "insufficient resources," it is due to idiot judges who think inmates shouldn't have to endure any real hardship. Poor little boo-boos, it's crowded in the prison! Waaaahh!
