Please pray

I hope all ends well for your nephew, Elok. http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

When I was a resident we lost a kid after a tonsillectomy. Hope your nephew does well.

They don't know what's wrong yet, but he's alert, lively, and on his way to Hopkins where they will put that **** in lockdown. Awesome. Thanks, docs and all.

Thanks again to all of you. It's some form of pneumonia, but he seems to be doing much better. He's out of Hopkins' ICU and into their normal Pediatric unit. Now they just need to figure out what happened.

Thankfully he's better http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

What should I pray to? I guess nothing. Or in other words, "I hope he gets better. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.gif"

Celeliamend 06-22-2012 07:50 PM

I'm glad to hear it sounds like he will be OK.

Faungarne 06-23-2012 12:14 AM

I haven't talked to them, but his mother's FB post indicates she's okay. My nephew is asthmatic and his little sister has seizures; they're unfortunately used to scary medical situations in that family. But it lets them take this easier now, I guess.

Luckily he got sick in Maryland, with access to the best hospital in the world.

Looks like everything worked out without my help. Good job.

r7rGOhvd 06-23-2012 07:53 AM

Yes. Healthiness http://www.discussworldissues.com/im...ons/icon14.gif

VyacheslaV 06-23-2012 02:35 PM

Well, he had a bit of a fever and low oxygen levels or some such, but they're working on that. He was in very low spirits this morning--his parents are working on that. They're hoping to transfer him out of ICU today, last I heard. Really, we're in no-news-is-good-news territory until they figure out what went wrong and why.

True, but it's not a procedure to be done just for the heck of it. If the tonsils have abscesses that casue recurring infections, if they're so enlarged that they interfere with breathing or swallowing, sure, but how often have I had patients come in with tonsils the size of little ol' kidney beans and the parents go behind my back and have them removed? Imagine their surprise when they discover that tonsillectomy doesn't prevent streptococcal pharyngitis? I wonder who's going around promulgating that lie?

Is it more common than fatal complications from anesthesia in general?

I don't know the exact numbers, and I'm not going to speculate.

EDIT: I probably shouldn't have mentioned this on a public forum. MrFun, if you could edit yours out, that would be awesome.

CedssypeEdids 06-25-2012 12:33 AM

Wow indeed, great that they figured it out and hopefully this is all behind you & the family now.

Well, I was going to title this thread "Please instantaneously acquire superior medical expertise to what's available at Johns Hopkins and haul your arse down to Maryland," but it seemed awfully verbose. Anyway, thanks for waiting until after the crisis passed to remind us that you are an atheist and like to be a douche about it.
