Have you experienced the joy of a mechanical keyboard?

And yes, now that the ESC key is red I use it far more than I should. It's just emotionally satisfying.

(Apologies for the picture. Apple still can't do cameras correctly.)

How is a mechanical keyboard different from any other?

Also, http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.gif no media keys. If it had those I might get it...

Hokimjers 11-18-2011 05:55 AM

My current keyboard lacks a numpad because my college desk is too small to fit both a full size keyboard and a bowl of cereal. It does, however, have media keys (specifically it has Fn key and the arrow keys correspond to stop, forward, back and play/pause)

"Mechanical" was a shitty word choice.

Spongebob 11-18-2011 06:55 AM

Uh, why?

Mechanical keyboards are called mechanical keyboards because they are the only keyboards that use a mechanical switch.

But all keyboards that aren't touch keyboards use a mechanical action.

Unwiseevove 11-18-2011 07:13 AM

The fact that it refers to the switch is not obvious.

xanaxnewtrader 11-18-2011 07:47 AM

HC, you're fighting against reality. They are called mechanical keyboards. If you wish, you can call them a "keyboards like those old IBM ones that make that nice *clunk* when you press a key".

I have a chiclet keyboard. I think it's just fine.

And no numpad? **** that.

What kind of nerd uses a numpad??

They make those, too. I just don't want one.

Hell, one of my co-workers uses this keyboard:

I have one of those old keyboards at home but I can't find an adapter for the old plugs. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...lies/frown.gif

EzekelEnzino 11-18-2011 10:11 AM

Usually not.

A nerd that plays MUDs, for example. Or a nerd that works for a bank and therefore types a lot of numbers. That is, me.

The kind that works on spreadsheets a lot?

I figured this thread would be about old-fashioned typewriters. http://www.discussworldissues.com/fo...s/frownnod.gif
I was thinking the same thing. And then wondered why anyone would want to use one these days.

PaulCameron 11-18-2011 08:18 PM

I always used the numpad with Civ 2.

Thank you Asher for letting me know about this. I have a few mechanical keyboards in my Amazon wish list... maybe one day I'll get one.

Arrocousa 11-19-2011 06:11 AM

My mom used to have one. But I learned to type on Apple IIs, Tandys, IBMs, and NECs.

puzobok 11-19-2011 07:06 AM

One handed keyboardist, eh?
