Dash Cams
 

With all the recent car talk on the boards, I've started to consider buying one of these devices.

What really got me thinking of them was while I was watching a bunch of crash vids on youtube.

Anyone know of a good one to buy somewhere? I'm looking for something small and easily hidden out of the way (Like between the rearview mirror and the windshield). Running concealed power shouldn't be a problem.

I'm looking for more of a true dash cam. The Go Pro's are nice and I've been thinking of getting one for scuba diving, but you have to manual start the recording. I'd like something that starts recording automatically. That and a Dash Cam should automatically overwrite the oldest video for continuous recording. I don't believe the Go Pro's do that.

Another vote for the Go Pro HD2, it gives the best video out of out of all the cameras that I have seen. When I took it sailing with me this year, the quality of the video in good light rivalled that of my DSLR with stock lens. You can also get remotes to start/stop it if you want to mount it somewhere that is hard to get to.

Note sure why you would want it to auto overwrite data though, just get a big memory card.

Because I want something that I wouldn't need to attend to constantly. With a Go-Pro, once the card is full, it stops recording. This is simply impractical for a car camera. With a true Car camera, once it's in place, you would never need to touch it or perform any type of maintenance.

OK, I think I understand. I guess it all comes down to how you use the camera. I only ever bother turning it on if I know I was going to do something interesting like drive round the nurburgring. I guess you are talking about having it on constantly while in the car and then saving the footage if something interesting happens.

The Go-Pro2 will give you better footage than that camera (plus you can mount it in more interesting places on the outside of your car). But if for what you want to use it for, something like that would probably be best. (BTW the Go Pro 2 has a better processor than the Go Pro 1.)

Have you been in a crash that wasn't your fault before or are there loads of bad drivers in your area or something? Just wondering why you want one in the US

Yes, I have. One of which could have been blamed on me even though I wasn't at fault. Luckily, it didn't turn out that way.

I live on the outskirts of Atlanta. Not the worst traffic, but bad enough.
