Default We're living in the future
Never thought I'd of been reading this news article quite so soon:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-17989553

Had to check it wasn't April 1st to be honest. Also there's one line, or more specifically one word, which warrants a head-slap in that article, you'll spot it when you think WTF? for a second then have an overwhelming urge to slap your forehead

Is the word "analysing"? Because it was misspelled.

No it was this sentence
Nevada changed its laws to allow self-driven cars in March. The long-term plan is to license members of the public to drive such cars

Somebody push that tech off a cliff. I enjoy driving, not being driven around by a computer...we all know how picky computers can be.

The scary thing is that given the appetite of the governments for regulation, we may not get the manual option for very long. For our own safety of course.

Whether we like it or not, the fact remains that the commute to work on a daily basis is more than likely the most dangerous part of our lives (although fortunately, it seems to be at an all time low). However, the fact remains that there is an enormous quantity of bad drivers on the road, especially considering it's fairly difficult to lose your license. I think it'll be a long while before we see fully automated driving, but if Google can somehow cut into the 30,000+ traffic deaths a year, I'm all for it.

You mean considering you can get your drivings license at wall mart for $10 in the USA. A computer controlled car would increase the safety in the USA i'm sure.

It's definitely not that easy to get a driver license here in the states. It costs $20.

It took me more paperwork and forms of ID to get my license when I moved between states than it took me to get a passport... Sometimes this country makes me wonder.

This is an awesome idea. Especially being backed by google's technology and data. While you're driving it scans the faces of other drivers to determine which ones are female so it can prepare to dodge in case they're currently texting on their android phone.

This is exactly my thinking, I'm sure there are many people in the government who would love to take the driver out of the equation.

It's only a matter of time until they try.

This kind of thinking makes me sad.

There are far too many people willing to give things up so we can cater to the idiots who can't handle anything, a better idea is simply to make getting a license more difficult/involved.

Seriously. gtfo.

C'mon man, lighten up. If they made licenses harder to get, most people wouldn't qualify. Considering how big this country is, driving is essentially a necessity to get to work. I'd rather rely on a complex computer to drive a car than most of the idiots on the road.

I'm fine with that, and what do we say whenever people can't just automatically "qualify" for something you need to take a test for? That's right, we require that they study and get better, instead of lowering the bar so just everyone can pass.

The truth is, in many places it is NOT a requirement to get to work, it's a luxury that people are used to having, and it may make getting to work easier/nicer, but most of the population lives in cities, usually those have public transportation.

And if more people failed their drivers test and had to use public transportation they would probably have more incentive to want to actually learn how to drive properly and strive to pass the test.

I can't see why any of that is a bad thing either.

I don't disagree, but I think you have a better outlook on humanity than I do. Most people I come in contact with in public have a hard time breathing and walking at the same time.
