Default PS3/Reciever/Surround Sound Question
Will my reciever: http://store.sony.com/webapp/wcs/sto...specifications

accept an AC3 audio stream being played by my ps3 and outputed via hdmi?

Is AC3 just another Dolby Digital audio stream? I.E. will it come up like all the other Dolby streams with the " Dolby Digital 3/2 " message on the reciever?

Thanks for the help guys.

If you set the audio to bitstream, yes.

Otherwise, you can have the PS3 handle the decoding and even get Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA via LPCM.

Hmmm...I think weve had this discussion before, but I was still confused afterwards.

Heres what I have- PS3>>>HDMI>>>reciever listed in OP>>>HDMI>>>Samsung HDTV

Audio settings on PS3-HDMI-Automatic- Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, PCM 2 channel-44.1,48,96 and another one, I forget.

This results in games, dvds and blurays outpuing dolby/dts to my reciever and it works beautifully, for 2 channel stuff I use prologic or CSTEK to simulate surround. However, for video files that have AC3/AAC etc, it acts as if it isnt recieving any sort of digital audio stream, just generic 2 channel. But, ive been reading that AC3 should come up as Dolby Digital stream, the same way that DVDs/games/blurays do etc.

If i tell the ps3 to use PCM 5.1 channel-44.1,48 etc my games, dvds and blurays have messed up sound, i.e. sometimes you can hear the surround channels but no the center, sometimes no sound at all. Also, I have the ps3 selected to use both 2 channel PCM and 5.1 channel PCM, it ALWAYS no matter what outputs 2 channel, I have to manually remove 2 channel pcm and then it will use 5.1 channel pcm. how frustrating.

Any help/advice?

EDIT:

Re-reading your post, can you explain what you meant, about having bitstream selected or the other option to have the ps3 handle the decoding?

Sorry, I don't have time to read the whole post but if you have HDMI running from your PS3, let the PS3 auto detect the audio settings. It should select AC3, DTS, as well as Linear PCM settings, the LPCM settings are what you want.

I have a very similar receiver (STRDG720) and I let the PS3 automatically detect. Dolby and DTS are not reported on the AVR because they are being decoded by the PS3.

Try those settings and pop in a Blu-ray. To take full advantage of the PS3's audio you want to *avoid* bitstream since that receiver won't handle the new formats.

Keep in mind, the fat PS3's still don't Bit Stream DTS-HD and TrueHD. Only the Slim's.

However, you are right in saying that his receiver should automatically detect the LPCM (To Transport all audio) audio options regardless.

To OP, You have to make sure you are getting all the LPCM audio options checked (Or automatically detected)

**NVM, just checked your Receiver, it doesn't do HD audio decoding... so the LPCM (and DTS-HD and TrueHD decoding) option is out of the mix.

**You can still have your Receiver do the decoding, that is just a matter of having the option on the PS3 for it to decode it or your Receiver to decode DTS, or Dolby Digital (AC3)

What I am saying is that LPCM is the only option for HD lossless audio on that receiver. (Regardless of which formats the AVR handles.) DTS and AC3 can be bitstreamed but you may as well allow the PS3 to handle all the decoding.

So for example, on auto, it looks like this on my bedroom setup:

I think you mean it is his only option. Not out of the mix. LPCM = decoded in the PS3 and raw audio sent via HDMI. So if a receiver cannot take an HD stream (thus it cannot decode a DolbyHD or DTS-HD bitstream), LPCM is how you still achieve HD.

After arduous research and testing I discovered that my reciever can not accept Linear PCM above 2.0 channel. My reciever can only accept DD 5.1, DTS and Linear PCM 2.0. Therefore, if I disable bitstream and use PCM, no matter what its 2 channel only and thats much worse than what I was getting- DD 5.1/DTS in games/movies etc. However, that is fine with me, Im perfectly ok with lossy DD 5.1. My main problem was that my video files were in AAC audio format, but I think ive found a way to convert AAC to AC-3. Ive sucessfully done it on one movie and ive been partially successfull on two others. Now instead of >play mp4> get 2.0 channel PCM I get >play mp4>get DD 5.1. Much better

thanks for all the help, learning all of this audio/video settings/ audio/video decoding has taken several years off of my life. I'll be glad when this is done.

Oh wow, it would appear you are right! I thought your model number being so close to mine that it would accept 5.1 LPCM. Apologies for making you chase ghosts.

If you are OK with leaving your computer on, use ps3mediaserver, it will on-the-fly transcode whichever format you need.

A 1.5Mbps LPCM 2.0 can output 5.1 DTS (just decodes it in a way that is silly.). Just FYI.

But it's easier with your current AVR to just have the PS3 send the signal to your AVR for decoding.
