Default Samsung looks to beat iPad 3 to market
http://hexus.net/mobile/news/tablets...ipad-3-market/

Website BGR claims to have learned from a trusted source, that Samsung is looking to launch a new Android 4.0 tablet next year, most likely at the Mobile World Congress in February.

What's more, is this tablet claims to sport a large 11.6 inch 16:10 screen whilst being "barely larger" than the current Galaxy Tab as the device will sport an extra-thin bezel. To top-off matters and to put a serious dent into Apple's iPad 3 launch plans, the display will feature a whopping, Retina-like, 2560 x 1600 resolution, exceeding the reported 2048 x 1536 resolution of the iPad 3. wonder if samsung will sue apple for copying their design....

Does an 11" device need such a stupidly high resolution?

I was wondering that as well. They all want to reach the fabled "retina display" benchmark.

My question is, where do we go from here ?

Are we going to have tablets with 4K resolutions in 18 months ? If we will, why ?

My concern is more: will the integrated GPU have enough grunt to run everything at such a high res or will every media aspect be downgraded to half the native res?

Yeah, that's another thing. I really doubt how the gpu's will cope with such exponential increases in resolution and if the media will be downgraded then why have such a high resolution at all.

What I really want is those high resolutions on a 24" screen not a 10" tablet.

Agreed about the resolution comments. I see it as some silly achievement system akin to World of Warcraft. Yes they're there to be taken but somewhat waste of time. I don't have much issue with the GS2 screen over the Nexus but I did set my GS2 to 914x548 res (210 DPI) and more comfortable with it.

Now the slim bezel and ICS makes me horny...

It should do, check out the videos of the new Tegra3, the graphics look to be on par with PS3/X360.

But Samsung and Apple will be using different screens. Samsung is using Pentile (which I assume is OLED) while Apple prefers IPS.

It helps the marketing.

Bit like the digital cameras you can buy with 12 or 16 MegaPixel resolution.

Lots of people assume they are better, where as you would probably be better paying more for a 'quality' camera with a lower resolution.

It's a headline figure to grab attention.

High power, big screen, awesome resolution... So, an hour's worth of battery life then, atop a price tag of a small house? I'll just keep on looking for that €200 Android 3 Christmas present then. /cheap

Does the iphone's tiny tiny screen need the same pixel density? Ask any iphone user and the answer will be yes. This is only take another notch from apple's belt.

IIIIIInterceeeeeepted!!!

We need to give the Samsung Engineers and Project Managers a round of fistbumps, they really put the heat on Apple. And bonus bump for thin bezels.

That literally doesn't make any sense. Technology improves immensely each year without sacrificing power for energy consumption. The iPhone 4S has a better battery life than the original iPhone, while costing the same and being an order of magnitude more powerful.

Exactly, with the resolution increases and power increases we also get advancement in battery life and management.

Actually I would love to have that resolution on ~10 inch tablets, I just think that there is no point going beyond these two logical steps in resolution.

It's nice to have over 300ppi but anything beyond that is useless.

Over the past few years, I've only seen battery life in mobile phones and laptops go down, from what used to be days or weeks to mere hours. Of course it's different for each device and even for each user, but in my experience, very few of today's devices would last one weekend of heavy use. Of course, it may not be a reasonable thing to expect, but I for one wouldn't really mind if power consumption was a bit more important. I've seen tablet specifications where the battery life is as little as five hours, which wouldn't even get me through a work day.

Basically, just like the rest of us, I'll always want a bit more than what I can get.

I'm not sure this counts, Samsung make very nice displays in fact if it weren't for all the court action Apple would be using this display. So if Samsung are going for Apples head the display won't be substandard.

I have a Galaxy S, which is 800x480 I believe, so I understand pixel density. You really don't need more than 1920x1080 MAX on a 10 or 11" screen.

Yeah, at like 9x5, not 25x16. And OMG, they are going to use the Tegra 3 in the new Samsung!? Oh noes! Tegra 3 is a pile of junk. The quad-core processor is on par with the iPad2 A5 which is down 2 cores, and 300MHz on each core!
Then the GPU is still behind.

I would say that Nvidia is currently roughly half a generation behind everyone in terms of performance.
With Tegra 3, they will finally be competitive with current PowerVR, IT, Apple, Samsung, and Qualcomm product.

Meh, I'll be picking up an Asus Transformer Prime sometime in the next month or so. Been getting great reviews and feedback, first quad-core tablet.
