Has anyone else been through some type of surgery? I've gone under for some laser treatments on my birthmark but on 10/20 I'm getting surgery to put my finger back together. As to not being use to surgery that includes bone being drilled into, what should I do to get the most comfort, since many have told me that it will be very painful. Or are they over exagerating? Any past stories you would like to share?

I had to get my wisdom teeth surgically removed because they were growing almost perfectly horizontally inside the gum. They had to cut open the gum, drill the teeth into bits, extract each bit, then stitch up the cut and wait for the gum to grow back.
It wasn't too bad after the anesthetic kicked in, which I'm fairly sure you'll be getting as well. I got local anesthetic, which means that only a part of your body loses its senses and you'll be conscious during the operation. Not sure if your surgery's serious enough to need global anesthetics, which will knock you out. The worst part is probably the anesthetics needle, and getting an injection in the arm or hand doesn't sound nearly as bad as one in the gum. They'll give some time for the anesthetic to kick into effect before starting the operation, so just relax. The needle also seems to have a small calming effect, maybe purely because your sense have dulled a little. No doubt you'll hear some funny sounds during the operation, but just try to stay calm. The flesh won't make any funny noises when the surgeons do their stuff on it. The bone might, and you might be able to feel your bone a little, but just trust the surgeons. The worst thing you can do is start panicking and cause them to accidentally damage, say, a nerve or something. |

With a local anesthetic, you'll feel a little pain when they actually apply that, but it's no worse than a flu shoot. I got in a pretty big fight at school a while ago and I actually bit a hole though my lip. The anesthetic was like a few sharp pains, but applying the stitches was no big deal afterwards. If the anesthetic you'll get is anything like mine, your finger will be pretty numb while the surgeons do their thing. All in all, it's not the "during" that would bother you too bad, but the healing that takes place after.

I am told that I am going under for his opperation due to it needing to be 100% clean. Not sure why I need to go under but that's what I've been told. I know when I'm down of won't hurt but as to the after pain, it is something that over the counter drugs or oxy, percs, ect., can't handle? And I jammed my finger into a fiends hip bone playing football and the upper bone of my finger(side with he nail) went straight back into the lower bone taking off the top left side of the bone with it. The top corner was down the side of my finger and the skin was slightly moved. And yes, I am getting a screw pit into me. Not sure if that was clarified.

TBH, post-surgery, my surgeons warned me of bad swelling and pain and gave me some painkillers. They also said to put an icepack on my cheek through a towel. So I did just that for maybe five to eight hours after surgery. Funnily enough, I felt no pain whatsoever. Was able to eat straight away, despite stitches in my mouth.
Like I said, not sure how bad your surgery would be compared to mine, but if you have a decent pain threshold, it shouldn't be too bad. |
